At age 57 I shot actual skeet for the first time. I'm a life long bird hunter but had never shot on an actual clays range. My 19 year old son was in from college and on his suggestion, since I had just got a new bird gun,we went and shot skeet for the first time. We did not do very well but I got to get the feel of my new 20 guage and it was a lot of fun. We shot 4 rounds. My son shot his old 12 guage OU and shot 16, 17, 16, 18. I shot 16, 16, 18, 18. We obviously didn't have a clue about the game and were the only shooters I saw that did not shoulder their shotgun before calling pull. We also had our shotguns choked like we bird hunt, with full over imp cyl. and I don't think we had a shot over 25 yards. Station 8 is a bitch. What a fun game! It looks like in a few trips you should be able to get on them a little bit better. So how do you guys choke for skeet and how many hits out of 25 do we need to shoot a respectable round as novices? I was surprised by my reaction, but there is something about watching that little clay disk explode to dust that fired me up!

I say that's pretty darn GOOD !!!! You still have good eyes, and instincts for shooting, so does your son BTW !!!

Id say the average "novice" 10 would be good.

Skeet is the most addictive thing I have ever got into. My first round was with an 1100, choked full with sixes. Got five! Decided that I might need a bit of instruction. The fellow that owned the (private)range was a tournament shooter and dreamed of finding a partner that would shoot as much as he did. The next weekend I showed up with a new 1100 skeet gun, two cases (500 per case back then) of AA's, a Mec loader and a lot of components. It was a very good summer! Eventually became a tournament shooter too but that ruined it by turning it into a job. 3200 Remington in 28 gauge is still my all time favorite shotgun.

I plan to go again. I liked it. I hope to use it to sharpen my shooting skills for bird hunting. Just watching it looks like there is no reason not to hit them all. Neither of us even got close....I could see that game getting personal if you did much of it.

Your scores were very acceptable considering your choke constrictions. Choke your guns Skeet and that should add 2-4more broken birds. Do some google searches and get a lead sheet as well as watch some YouTube. Briley in Houston is considered one of the best when it comes to chokes.

I'd hate to see what I would shoot now. I got up to a constant 23 and sometimes 24. I shot number 8s, with 26 inch barrels bored skeet and skeet

That is not bad at all considering first trip and the chokes used. Station 8 can really be a pain until you figure it out. Think knee jerk reaction for station 8.

Last skeet league I shot in has been years ago but had average for the league of 23+ with numerous straights. Shot that league with Winchester Model 12 that had a 30 inch full choke barrel cut down to 22 inches and no choke. Shots on a skeet field are 22 yards or less generally so open bore will sill work ok but the skeet choke guns I have patterned were a bit more even in shot distribution than my cut down barrel.

Tell your son to join his college trap and skeet team. He'll be running consistent 22-24 per round in a matter of weeks.

After a while Skeet becomes mechanical. I know a guy who used to be able to go 25, 50, 100 or more without a miss. But out in the field he had problems getting a handful of birds.
Sporting clays is more realistic to hunting.

Same here. Both of my neighbors sons shot for UT. They'd flat out embarrass me on skeet, which I never really shot. Took 'em dove hunting and they were right down to 5-7 birds a box.

After you shoot awhile I would say 22-23 is pretty good. But as said above, for some it does not translate to good shooting in the field; sporting clays can be better. Great pastime.

A good shot is a pretty dang good shot in anything. Sounds like you did well.

that's great for yalls first trip out. skeet or ic chokes and 8s or 9s is more common. is a very good discipline to practice. personally i only practice shooting skeet and trap, international rules. Main difference is low gun, targets on a delay, and some doubles at places they aren't in American skeet. that will make you a much better bird shooter than todays sporting clays gurus. I though it was great when it first took off, but now they are getting into a lot of shots that aren't a very realistic hunting scenario type shot. And yes, when you stay at it, it is very addicting. Don't ever shoot a handful of 25s and it gets real bad!!!

I have been back 3 more times. I went today to Hot Wells and shot in the heat. I've been shooting a new 20 guage OU that I am trying to get used to. Today I took a 12 OU that I am more familiar with. Still shooting with a low gun for bird hunting. Shot a 23 and 22. Station 8 is really pissing me off and starting to get personal! What a fun game.

The key to station 8: If you can see the target when you pull the trigger, you missed. Cover the target, bang, follow through.

Thanks P_102. I think it was mostly in my head. Shooting low gun, I was thinking I needed to hurry. It looked easy, but I was missing, and then thinking way too much, which never helps. I got out early one morning and shot an entire round from station 8. I realized if I narrowed my focus to the lead edge, then took the time to make a smooth mount and get on it, there is plenty of time without rushing it. Started breaking a few from station 8 after that. I'm hooked now though. Going to shoot at Hot Wells tomorrow. If any of you guys are out there tomorrow, I will be easy to recognize. My wife was going into Houston, so I asked her to pick me up a case of federal #8 target loads. She came home laughing and proud as a peacock with a case of pink shells in pink boxes. I think she is trying to put some kind of psychology on me. Screw that, it's not working. I'm shootin em.

Key to station 8 for me was to mount up and do a practice swing with my gun first- much like you may do in golf. I found that once I began doing that I very very rarely missed. If you don't have anyone else in your squad shoot a whole round from the middle, range helpers probably wouldn't have a problem with it. Once you get the speed down you can practically do it with your eyes closed. Another key is where you line up (how your shoulders point). You always want to line up to where you'll break the Target and then move over to aim at the lip of the houses, that goes for all stations. Key if you have trouble shooting it quickly and have to turn more.

‘Hold Point’ for most shooters is around 1/4 of the way from the house to the center of the field. This allows for using the Sustained Lead style of shooting which is preferred by most successful shooters. Holding on the ‘lip’ of the house takes that option away. P_102

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been 7 times now. Usually shoot around 21-23 out of 25. Now that I am on to station 8, I am looking for 25 straight. I don't think the hold points you guys refer really apply to the way I am practicing. I call for the clay pigeon(s) with a low gun. I pick it up out of the house, then mount and shoot it. I'm shooting to hone my skills as a bird hunter so I don't think I would gain as much starting with a premounted shotgun.

Station 8 is a trick shot, no application to hunting. Skip 8 and practice more on the other stations. Even better, shoot sporting clays.

If you're hitting them that well without having the gun mounted you need to try I-skeet

Smokey Bear, the hold points mentioned generally help with low gun as well as mounted. They promote shorter gun swings which is generally beneficial as is the ability to hold a sustained lead as already mentioned. Picking it up out of the house as you say is part of game, though, too. My hold point is usually 1/3 of the way from the house to the intended break point and my eyes are centered halfway between the house and the hold point and "seeing" everything possible from one end of your peripheral vision to the other. The idea being that you pick up the bird's movement out of the corner of your eye - you might find as many do that your autopilot takes care of the rest as our eyes are inherently programmed to pick up movement out of the corner of our eyes and track it instinctively. If all of that sounds familiar in hunting, well it is.

By the way, those scores are excellent for a new skeet shooter. As others have already mentioned, you will find that sporting clays will hone your shooting and hunting skills even more.
