Went into Bass Pro to look at purchasing a new lever gun. When I asked to see how smooth the action worked on a given gun, I was told no. Who buys a lever gun without first checking the smoothness of the action. IMO, it's like demanding a customer buy a pair of shoes to see if they fit.

Someone please tell me true gun stores don't operate this way.

Just another indication there are too many attorneys at work nowadays.

Must be you. Never had that issue. Was just there on Friday to buy a rifle. Buddy was the guy I was dealing with and I had no problems. They didn’t have what I was looking so I went to a Academy.
Even after he knew that I was not going to buy a rifle he still didn’t give me any hassle even after he pulled three different rifles from the back when I just wanted check them out to compare to what I really wanted.

Drove a few miles down the road and found the same gun at Academy. The guy behind the counter gave me the same response at first and pointed out how all the display lever guns have an external lock on them so the actions can't be opened. I guess they must break their policy and remove these for some of you. Anyway, he told me he would check in the back to see if he could find one of the same models in an unopened box with no lock on it. He did and I found the action satisfied my expectations. After a little cleaning and oiling, it will go in my safe.

I suspect this policy may have been driven by some idiot putting a live round in a gun somewhere and then letting it go off. I remember such a thing happening at a gun show a while back. Anyway, the insurance companies may have picked up on it and decided the best way to keep it from happening was to require their insured retailers physically lock down the actions of at least some display firearms.

So then, if you're seriously interested in buying a firearm at a store where actions are physically locked on display guns, you'll need to ask to see one that's still in the box if you want to check the look and feel of its working action. Of course, that is if the clerk is willing to accommodate your request.

When you think about it, checking the action of any firearm equates to starting the motor in a vehicle. Until you know how well it works, you would be an idiot to buy it.

Case in point. Last year I purchased an inexpensive, single-action revolver from Academy that came with a coupon for a 22 Mag cylinder to go with the 22LR cylinder that came with the gun. When I received the extra cylinder from the factory, the action would not cycle with it. I contacted the manufacturer and they decided to send me another one. When it arrived I found it too would not cycle in the revolver. I ended up having to send the gun and cylinders back to the factory for repair, which really ticked me off with it being a new, never fired (by the owner) gun. When it came back from the factory, it worked as it should. All of this hassle would have been avoided if I were able to test the action with BOTH cylinders before deciding to buy it.

Now granted, a complete test and verification of a firearm's action before the purchase is obviously not feasible. However, as the case with the revolver I purchased, the most obvious issues could be indentified by allowing customers to test the action before forking out their hard-earned money.

lol!

Stores, have gotten a little more hesitant but I bought another 6.5 CM but before I did I let them know I wanted to cycle the bolt and pull the trigger. He unlocked it and simply ask me to aim it at the ceiling.
