My father does a lot of work out in the brush off of his kubota tractor, clearing brush and fallen trees from around the cow pens. More than once he has been surprised by a boar that was semi-aggressive and made him nervous. I'd like to find something he could take with him to use for protection.

I think a youth size 20 gauge would be just about perfect. My father is not a big guy and getting up there in years. Will consider other options I think he can handle.

Not looking for anything pretty as this is going to be a "tractor/brush" gun. Would like to keep it around $200-300 if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Edited to add: I am in Lubbock.

At your price range, I would think you could get a new youth 20 ga shotgun.

The lower the better. I bet it gets scratched and dinged anyway. No reason to buy new if there is a used one out there.

There's a 20 gauge 870 listed in these classifieds for $250 if that's of interest. It's not a youth model, but has a 26" barrel. An being an 870, I'm sure it would hold up to anything your father could throw at it.

X2

Plus for the intended purpose Iíve used a pipe cutter to make 18 1/4Ē barrels on more than one shotgun. Just clean up the burrs.

Academy sells the Maverick 88 for $189. Lubbock has at least one Academy store.

As a farmer and one with many birthdays. I would maybe think a long the lines of a handgun in a chest rig. If he is crawling on and off a tractor he will not likely have a shotgun in his hands. That to me would put a handgun in a chest rig more likely to be with him at the needed time. I have had hogs surprise me also, and they can come from spots you would not be looking for them.
