As promised, here's the results of my first outing with the new 10/22. The conditions, right at first, were perfect: cool and no wind. I set up at 50 yards and began testing and adjusting the scope and then trying out different magazines and ammo to see if the new baby had a preference. As usual, with a 10/22, it ran just fine with whatever I fed it and whatever I fed it with. I selected 3 different ammo brands: CCI, ARMSCOR and Blazer. As you can see from the pics, at 50 yards, the CCI SGB's did the best. (I jerked the trigger on one shot of the 5 and called it immediately.) I didn't get to test the Blazer ammo because the wind came up and was really blowing hard and didn't feel I could give it a fair test. I'll run some of it next time I'm out. All-in-all, I am happy with the new addition and look forward to doing some more range work with it. The trigger broke cleanly, but was too heavy for my liking so I may mess around with it to lighten it up.

Looking at the pics, I can see that you can't really see the groups very well. On the LH target page, the bottom, RH target is the CCI MiniMags group at 3/4 inch; (the other three targets on this page are scope adjustment/magazine feeding/break-in testing). Then on the RH target page, the top, LH target is ARMSCOR at 1 inch; the RH, top target is CCI SGB at 1/4 inch with a called, nasty flier. Basically, one ragged hole.

I decided that the 3-9 Weaver that came with the new toy just wasn't a good match. Even at 3 power, everything is out of focus at 20-25 yards. So I dug around in my scope collection and found a Leupold 4X RF Special that I bought for a nice Remington 511 several years ago.
https://www.customshopinc.com/product/leupold-compact-4x-rf-special-scope/
I measured the trigger pull and it was a bit over 6 pounds. Took a stone to the sear in the area where it engages the trigger and was able to get it down to 4 1/4 pounds; plus the smoothing removed a bit of the "gritty" feel. Will try to get out to the range and see if better glass and trigger pull help any with the accuracy. (It may very well be that the old, shaky fart who's pulling the trigger is the problem; his wife certainly thinks so!)

Snuck out first thing this morning; no wind, perfect lighting, with the new Leupold scope and freshly ground trigger and sear. 50 yards, from the bench, with CCI Small Game Bullets, 5 shot group. After shooting this one target, I declared it was time to go find something else to do, because I sure as heck can't improve it!

That’s much better. I wasn’t going to talk bad about the first targets, but expected the rifle to shoot a lot better than it did the first day.

No need to be kind to me! My shooting abilities are most suspect even on the very best of days, with the very best of equipment. As they say, "it ain't the arrow, it's the indian!"

If it shot that good with supersonic bullets, you're golden. Now try some Green Tag or standard.

Took the new baby out again and even in the high winds, she shot well. I still don't like the trigger, even after stoning the sear and hammer, so I just ordered a Volquartson Target Trigger for her. It will possibly reduce the trigger pull down a bit more from the current 4 1/4 pounds, but most of all I'd like to get rid of the "grit." I'm afraid to stone the stock trigger/sear engagement area any more for fear of creating a safety issue. With kids and grandkids likely to be running lots of rounds through this rifle, I sure don't want my amateur gun smithing skills to create a problem. I'll let you all know how this modification works out. I'm certain that all of you are sitting on the edge of your chairs, waiting the next update. smirk

I installed the Voquartson Target Trigger and am quite pleased with the results. The trigger pull went from 4 1/4 pounds to 2 1/2 pounds (average of 5 pulls on both measurements). And the best part about the new trigger is that it eliminated the gritty feel. This appears to be the best $40 I've spent on a 10/22, and I've dumped LOTS of money in my collection of 10/22's over the years!

The best trigger I know for a 10/22 is the Power Custom 3 piece set. Adjustable sear and trigger takes out all slop and settles in at about 1.5# of butter smooth pull.

Yes, Cast, I agree with you. I put the Power Custom package in my 10/22 Target model and it's the smoothest shootin' rifle of the entire bunch.

Well, now you gotta try a Kidd two stage trigger upgrade.

Are those groups with a factory barrel?

Yes, sir; stock as a rock, right out of the box! I swabbed out the barrel when I first got it, took it to the range and put quite a few rounds of different kinds of ammo through it to season the barrel and determine what ammo it seemed to like the best. Ran a bore snake through it and then I began shooting for groups. All shot from a bench rest and all shot at 50 yards. Best groups were in ideal wind conditions and with an upgraded scope from the Weaver that came with the gun originally. But strictly a factory barrel. I have several 10/22's; some shoot as well as this one does but most are not quite so accurate. I think it's the luck of the draw as the rifle goes down the assembly line.

My 10/22 shot 2”-3” at 50 yards on the factory barrel. It’s one hole with my Green Mountain. You certainly got a good one.

Yes, I do realize that this one is better than average, and it's one of the reasons why I went ahead and spent the money to do the trigger upgrade.

I don't blame you - that factory trigger is horrendous. I've heard those VQ kits get good reviews. I got a brimstone trigger job on mine and I love it. It's really hard to shoot any sort of reasonable group with the factory trigger.

After I stoned the trigger and sear engagement areas on the stock trigger, it wasn't too bad. But like you say, it's tough to shoot decent groups with the nasty trigger you get on 95% of the 10/22's. I understand the whole "lawyer trigger" deal, but I don't think it would cost Ruger more than a couple of bucks per rifle to polish up the trigger group a bit and still have a completely safe trigger, so I don't know why they don't go ahead and make one of the most popular 22 rifles in the world even better!
