I am in the process of building a non-suppressed 458 and would like any recommendations for best hog stopping ammo inside 100 yards. Also thoughts on the cartridge also.

I've considered the cartridge, and specifically for pigs...but it just seems like it slings way more bullet than what's really needed. Not that I'd criticize the choice---it's just not for me. I went with the Grendel.

As far as bullets go, I have a hard time imagining any bullet ordinarily loaded in this cartridge that would not do the job. A thumper for sure!

I weighed the options of a hard hitting AR cartridge for hogs, including the 458 SOCOM, and the .50 Beowolf. Brass, and bullet prices led me away. I am a hand loader, and was still turned off by the cost of components, much less loaded ammunition. And it was not going to do very well beyond 100 yards, which was a turn-off for me.

I decided on an AR-10 type platform with a DPMS LR-308. It has been no slouch on hogs from 20 yards to almost 500 yards. And, quite frankly, .308 Win is very affordable to shoot, and has been killing the bad since 1952.

If there was an AR15 that could handle .308, I'd be all over it. I find the AR10 platform to be too danged heavy.

All in how they are set up. I am sure there are terribly heavy AR-15's, and I am sure there are surprisingly light AR-10's.

Mine as a bare rifle is not much to fret over.

If you are loading supersonic there are several bullets in the 300gr and 325gr range expand great. When you can find them the Remington 405gr soft point made for the 45-70 works great in the Socom; you can get them up to 1600 fps if you have a tough shoulder.

The 458 Socom really shines when running a suppressor though. I built a bolt action integral suppressed years ago and a AR15 integral suppressed a year or so ago. I use the Outlaw State 500gr expanding subsonic bullet and am running just over 1000fps. The bullets are $1.25 each but they work great; shooting in a wet berm got almost 30" of penetration and full expansion was roughly 3/4"

I usually loaded the Hornady 325 gr FTX bullets for the one I had. It was Thor's hammer on anything that was shot with it.
It can be a very accurate round out to 100 yards, after 150 the bullet is just falling out of the sky.
At 200 yards it drops 1.5 feet, at 300 yards it drops over 5 feet.

The 458 SOCOM is fun as hell to shoot, but gets very expensive. I never shot any commercial ammo out of mine, only hand loads.

I got tired of its limited range, and sold it. I replaced it with a DPMS LR260H, and have never looked back.

Thanks for the comments guys. For the record i have a little bit of everything from 17 up thru the 338-06 including several Grendels. I am building the 458 as a short range (read as under 100yds) gun mainly for pigs. As we hunt bottom land that is wooded and enjoy eating them it makes it more enjoyable when we don't have to try to track a pig thru water and briers. Most of my shots are head shots but this is for others to use that may not have the patience to wait for a head shot. Once again thank you for the info.

Look at ballistics and ammo cost for the .50 Beowolf.

FG that is one of the first things i did and the real deal breaker was factory ammo. Since i am not making this as a primary rifle it will be using factory ammo and the Beowulf is only loaded by AA as far as i could find. I can buy 458 local.

So local .458 comes in below the price of .50 ammo and shipping?

Runs just a little more but there is the convenience part of it also. Don't get me wrong. I really like the ideal of using bolts that i have on hand (Grendel) and may go to the 50 if i do another big bore.

I found it easier to find 458 subs so that is the route I went. A buddy has the 50 Beo. We each have a suppressor for them.

It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.
