It has the dreaded lock. Anybody with a 686 had any lock related problems?
Took the wife dress shopping today, and she found just the perfect one. After she told me about it, I mentioned the new pistol, and she said “can we use it for the concealed classes I want us to take”? Yes dear, says I (happy to escape with no drama). That went well....

Hopefully the dress was no more than $30. Don't need useless crap like that cutting into component funds.

How did you buy the gun without her knowing in the first place? I have no idea how to get away with something like that.

Sneaky, I think it’s all in the timing. And, she spends money like crazy, whereas I hardly ever buy anything for me. She has been after me for us to take the concealed carry course, and she hates my Beretta PX4 (too many knobs, switches and levers), but likes revolvers. She has a snubbie 38, but couldn’t hit the truck with it. So this one should be something she can shoot pretty well. Honestly, the perfect pistol for her would probably be a Colt Diamondback in 38, but that’s just too expensive. I have one in 22, and she likes it. Sure hope she’ll like this bigger heavier pistol. It won’t kick at all with 38s.

A used S&W 686 in 357 was my first fun. I rarely shoot it but still love it. Never new about this lock up problem. I used to shoot mine A lot back when 357maf was afforable.
Anyways hope u enjoy yours as much as I've enjoyed mine.

.38s in a 2.5" 686 are very pleasant and easy to shoot. Not exactly a small pistol, more like a big pistol with a short barrel, but very good for engaging non or infrequent shooters.

I have a Taurus tracker (basically a knock off 686 I believe) that is a joy to shoot with 38s. My wife loves it, and has all but claimed it as her own.

We just reached 70 1/2, so had to take the minimum req’d distribution. That was a decent sum of money. Some got reinvested and I had some sent to the checking account (slush fund). If we don’t spend money, it’ll all wind up going to the kids. Might as well spend it before they get it. Wait till she sees what I got her for our 50th anniversary - this weekend. She may pee down her leg. We spent many years pinching pennies and saving money, and now it’s time to enjoy the results. But it’s still hard to spend money. It goes against our mindset.
I spent probably 4 months thinking about that 686 and the cost. Finally decided that I did want it, so I went and bought it. Next up is a Tikka T1x, whenever I can actually handle and examine one, and then what scope to buy.
All those long years of saving money, and now we are gonna spend some.

686 a great gun, but a little on the heavy side for concealed carry with some clothing. I have two pre-lock 4 inch barrel guns. extremely accurate.

My first handgun was a model 586 4". I hated selling it to buy books for my Senior year of college, but the results have been worth it.
I think ya'll will enjoy it just fine. 38 special for plinking and 357 magnum for danger.

I signed the paperwork and picked up the 686 this afternoon. I fiddled with the sights till it was dead on, and the wife and I burned some powder. We shot the Python for a while, then the 686 till it got dark. I’m a little better with the Python, but not much better, and pretty good with both. The trigger pull and hammer on the Python are better than the 686. The 686 has a better grip. The Python has a better finish/polish (nickel vs the stainless 686). With the same ammo, the Python seems to kick a bit more. Maybe that’s just my imagination.
I might see if I can find a smith to smooth out the trigger pull. It’s a little gritty. And maybe he can install a target type hammer, like on the Python.
