I have to admit that I am already on the TPWD drawn hunt site scoping out places for next year. The thought of getting picked in some incredible spot like Big Bend or Black Gap or some other awesome WMA has got me pumped up already. Why cant every month be November and December?

I am starting to feel down like hunting season is over and its time to get the golf clubs out. Ive got a few more piggy trips left but I need to go now while the cool weather is here.

Have to admit that I've been looking at the Drawn Hunt pages also. Trying to learn more about all the WMA's and the hunts they offer.

Of course, all of the Western States draw application periods have started, so doing those too!

After I found out I didn't get drawn back in October I was already thinking about the 2018-2019 season.

Yep, I was talking about next years draw yesterday with some guys. I told them there were no deer left on public lands and not to apply. You guys shouldn't either.

Way back when, when I was traveling just Texas most of the time, I made a point to go see the various Lottery locations whenever possible. Talk to the staff, look at local support facilities aka places to Eat/Sleep and collected bidnizz cards of the places I liked the looks of....and won more Lottery Hunts in those 5-8 years than I have in ALL the years since then.

That also was when the Lottery Hunt system did not have any digital history's so I also collected and studied all the previous Lottery Hunt manuals I could find to build a archive of the Hunt Success %'s and changes in #'s of Permits & bag limits offered year by year....looking for where to go to have a better chance to score IF I could get drawn at a given location.

With the advent of todays digital system all that background research is moot, as the % of Resident entery's has soared, and the # of Non Resident Entry's has skyrocketed, IMO destroying any reasonable chance for a Resident Entry to score a Permit anywhere at a much higher failure rate than under the Pre Digital Program.

So, as before when I did not blindly enter all of the Hunt Sites in a given category, I have cut down on ALL of my TPW Lottery Category Entry activities, and spend far more $'s on big $ winner Scratch Off's, that could pay for a much more successful Pay to Play Hunt in a location of my choice, both In State and Out of State or Across one of the Ponds. I'd really like to do a Hunt in Austrailia or New Zealand, or Argentina about as much as Africa...and it's bigtime safer too.

Just so I make myself perfectly clear, YES, I do still enter TPW Lottery Hunts every year...but in a humongeous amount smaller # of the them, and on a Veeeery small selective level of sites unlike in the past....or about like my Mega M$ Powerball Prize entries...just for the fun of it with Zero Success Expectations.

This is the time of year when I work on my western draw hunts. That occupies a ton of my time till May. I apply for give or take 8 states. Tpwd draws are pretty straight foward compared to most other states.

I like WileyCoyote have cut down the number of entries, but have been more selective the last few years. I have been very successful in draws over the last 3 yrs and feel my luck may have played out. I will have to put in and see next year.

Bigfoot I was lucky and got drawn for the private lands MD in 2016. Keep plugging away at it. Everyone of us that had been drawn were single draws. The only reason we had 75% success was that one of the guys left to go home half way through the hunt. I was loading my deer when he was driving out of the ranch. Didn't know if he had something urgent or just gave up. His loss.

Last thought...after acquiring high teen #'s of ...whoops almost typed "Preference Points" nee Loyalty Points...what a lame name but then it fits the Lottery Program these days as IMO there is nothing Loyal about this Program to long term participants...but JMHO and I digress..it becomes more and more important to not "waste" a categories + dozen or more LP's on a Hunt with low expectations of success, or with on line reports from various sources of Hunts that are not well managed. I've got high teen LP's in several categories and find my self not wanting to jepoerdize that 10+ going on close to 20 years in some categories of "investment"...and would rather take my chances on winning enough $'s to pay for LOTS more of a sure thing in a Pay to Play outdoor or Hunting experience.... Just Sayin'.

FWIW...Who? has been Loyal to WhoM??? Last time I was drawn - last year - my Hunt Permit was Cancelled due to a computer error in issuing too many Permits for the service capacity of the location...with no reinstatement or even 1st dibby's of a Drawn Permit for the following year, a Bonus LP apology yadda yadda or anything else, as I would have expected with any other commercial activity on the Notice Letter.

Ron, after they realized that they drew too many people did they do a 2nd drawing with only the names of the first group that was drawn?

Dunno, I just got a letter that said Your Permit has been cancelled due to a computer error, that "over selected" the # of Permits to be issued. Your Hunt fee will be reimbursed to your CC yadda yadda. Sounds like the computer did a White Rabbit and did not turn it self off when the pre requisite # of Permits ordered had been drawn.

I was hoping that they would honor those of us who were "over selected" this year would have a Permit issued for the Next Year, and would have expected them to cut back on the # of Permits approved for the Drawing by the biologists next year. Oh Well that seemingly easy peasy solution got lost in the State Budget and Authorizations blizzard...and why I will never work for the Gubiment of any kind.

I did a years worth with the Census in 2010 trying to manage a pre printed bulk Kits & Document distro center in a Sub Regional location that serviced umm 12-15 counties & killed a lot of trees too....and that was enough chinese fire drill for me, getting paid 45% less than the same job & work load paid in Dallas. Passed the Feeby background check somehow...always wanted to hit the "secret" alarm button to see if the Federales in the office across the street would respond when I had to releive the receptionist, sitting behind the bullet proof glass, bored stiff.

I start monitoring the TPW site and click on Permits under the Hunting section to drill down PDQ in late July/August...S'posed to be some changes this year but seems to me the more they change it the more it stays the same bottom line with the baby step sized changes implemented after the switchover to digital.

Same here! Often times it takes several hours of research to choose my 1st choice. Then every year they complicate it by opening or closing units. Nearly a full time gig.

The thing I hate is when it is getting close to the drawing, and you get an email from TPWD. You get your hopes up, then find it is just a reminder for the Texas Big Time Hunts! Big let down. frown
