When I first got my thermal scope (Pulsar XD50a), I was using those small chemical hand warmers to assist in sighting. I discovered an easier and more effective method which I thought might be helpful. I cut the bottom off an aluminum soda can and staple it to the bullseye of my target. Because the aluminum dissipates heat rapidly it shows up as a clear black spot (assuming white=hot selected) on the scope. The image is much clearer than the hand warmers which tend to "bloom" and become fuzzy.

Yes, most things metal will work. We use a large washer. It's about 2" wide, with a 1/2" to 3/4" hole in the middle. We have several rifles that will center punch the hole and not touch the washer!

My old IRD Mkii and Armasight 336 could see a certain yellow target with black circles at 50 easy. When at 100 I used a hand warmer.

Two frozen bottles of water. One vertical and the other horizontal.

That seems like an awfully large target.

I like small chemical handwarmers and small pieces of aluminum foil as fr3db3ar suggests. The nice thing about the aluminum foil is that you can cut it to whatever size you like, making for a very precise target.

My buddies 6.8 and his new 308 Win shooting the new 125 SST loads work very well. A 125 SST out of a 20" AR-10 308 is pure awesomeness!

Some of the ranges I go to don't allow the hand warmers due to the internal particles getting sucked up into the AC unit. The aluminum can works great, also aluminum tape works well too. I have also duct taped a spent casing after it was fired a the heat hold pretty long. Just when you hit it, the casing blows through the target.
