Just moved to the Houston area from out of state. Looking for some public land to turkey hunt so I looked through the TPWD information online in their interactive map but was confused because all of the WMA's I clicked on didn't have turkey hunting rules listed but had it for other game. Does this mean that no turkey hunting is allowed in these places or does they follow the rules for the county the WMA is in?

Also, definitely not looking for anybody to give up their spots - I don't mind doing my own homework/legwork but any advice on where NOT to go would be appreciated! I know how certain public spots were in other states I lived - would rather not get shot at!

Not just looking at the Houston area so ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's a good news / bad news situation. The bad news is that there's very, very little public land in Texas, especially compared to most of the western states. The good news is that fee-based private land hunting is very good. Try monitoring the "Outfitters and Guides" section of this board for hunting access opportunities.

welcome

Many of the east Texas hunting areas are closed for turkey hunting due to current restocking efforts or poor bird concentrations.

Download the public Hunting Booklet - https://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_w7000_0112a.pdf

Goto the Region summery page - for example Region 1 is on page 29. You can see on the chart which WMA has the turkey hunting.

Now, to hunt the WMAs you'll have to buy the APH permit.

If you’re willing to drive there’s the Federal land NW of Fort Worth. It’s called the LBJ National Grasslands. There’s birds up there.
