Why could they not just limit the ammo, less velocity, to young people instead of banning the gun? ...

a bullet traveling at 1450 fps will kill ya just as dead as one going 2900 fps.

I just cut my sig 556 into tiny pieces with my chop saw. About to do the same with the ammo.

Because it would do as much to help as banning AR-15's - absolutely zero. Besides, they are chambered in a lot of different rounds; do you want to limit all of it? If you're entertaining the possibility of banning anything you're looking at the squirrel they released for you.
