Not that it really matters to me I don't care either way, but the "out performs a 270" caught my attention. Load data from what I see is with a 26 inch barrel, wonder how that changes if you don't have a 26 inch?
Data for a 270 is not usually done with a 26 inch barrel and I believe you can wring a little more out of it with one. Although a 270 doesn't have the twist to stabilize it unless you have a custom barel I would bet it with a 26 inch barrel would still outperform with heavy for caliber bullets.

depends on what you mean by "outperforms."
ammo is more exclusive and expensive. requires a magnum bolt face. more powder through the same 6.5mm hole means quicker throat erosion and barrel life. Shoots the same high bc bullets, but just a little faster.
I can think of lots of stuff that "outperforms" a .270, but I can't think of many that have killed as much game over the years. The two cartridges are completely different animals. What a silly comparison. Goes to show you what their target market is for this new round.... a solution to a problem that never existed.

If I thought I needed something like that, I’d just get the 270 out of the safe. As for using the new 6.5 PRC for long distance, I thought everybody agreed that the 6.5 CM was perfect. How can ya beat perfect?

I have often thought about a .270 build using a 1-9 twist, probably won't do it.

I have often thought about a .270 build using a 1-9 twist, probably won't do it. I thought the same when berger came out with their 170 grain for .277 cal, but if I'm going to go through the expense of rebarelling my 270 I'm going to turn it into a 280AI and have a lot more bullet choices.

I got a long way to go to wear out my near new South Carolina built 24" barreled fav M70 270's barrel..and turn it into a 280AI...but if'n I could find a good skinflint quality donor with a rusty or POS wore out barrel ...that could/would make more sense to me...and then the ?? becomes either a 6.5 x'06 or a 280 AI ...hmmm....the if this/if that's ? makes my head hurt.
OTOH a new 6.5PRC is a horse of another color in a new toy to explore that I can buy at far less than a custom barreled rehabbed donor & re sell if I don't like it....and how I became a "Rifle Looney" in 2 easy steps. Ron
