I have a buddy that wanted to learn how to make knives. He bought a small forge and after a few weeks of learning and testing his work he hammered this one out for me. I wanted to be his first paid customer so $ was exchanged. This was hammered out of a leaf spring. The wood is from a huge fallen mesquite on my lease. I really like the burnishes on the blade and the fact that it's all original, not to mention shave test sharp and very hard. He told me as a test, he drove a test blade he made into a solid block, across the grain, cut it out and noticed no deforming to the point or edge. I'd like some ideas on how to make the handle a little more tactile. I'm thinking of checkering at a few grip points, laser engraving, or branding with a rope pattern iron.

Nice, nothing like the feeling of taking someting old and turning it into something completely different and new.

Very nice first knife, especially not working from bar stock.

I wouldn't do anything to the handle, except I would soak it overnight in boiled lin seed oil to bring out the wood grain and keep it from drying out and cracking. It matches the simple design of the knife IMO.

Should I keep the blade out of the lin seed oil while soaking?

Won't hurt it but what I do is drop it handle first into a plastic cup an then pour in the oil up to where the blade starts.

That's awesome to see a new knife maker on the rise. I'm taking a 16 year old in that wants to learn how to forge, he's been tinkering on a charcoal forge and an old piece of railroad track. I'm going to give him an old gas forge I don't use anymore and give him some shop time. Us old guys can't take the knowledge with us, we might as well pass it on. ..

Good job on your new knife.

Glad to hear these skills are being passed on. That's very important, especially in this day and age!

Gonna hit a few gun shows and scrounge the tables for a case, unless someone knows a source here.
