I went to the range this morning with my brother to break in his new rifle. R700 in 300 win mag. We shot three different factory loads. Everyone of them would hang up in the action after the shot, requiring an excessive amount of force to open the bolt and eject the spent round. Un-fired rounds would slide into the action as normal. Any advice on the issue and how to deal with it?

Thank you

If it's locking up the bolt, then that's a hot load. Stop shooting that ammo.

Chad, you might want to reread his post. 3 different factory loads.

One factory load I could believe ammo but 3 different factory loads sounds like a rifle issue. Call Remington Monday have ammo and lot numbers it had issues with and gun and serial # when calling.

I bet there is a headspace issue or worse, it has been several years but I have seen one Remington 700 that had no rifling in the barrel

I agree with kmon1 - sounds like some sort of headspace issue.

Just a couple years ago a friend was using my range to sight in a new Rem 700 7mm Mag with Rem factory ammo. I had stiff extraction and then locked up tighter than a drum. It had to be returned to Remington. The note said that the returned rifle had headspace issues.

Probably best return it if it is under warranty.

Ok, it's a head space issue them. I'm sure it's 100% correct since we are all internet gunsmiths here.

Like others said sounds like a gun problem if all brands of factory ammo tried had issues.

I would find your nearest Remington service spot and swing buy.

If you want to drive to mckinney one day I can bring gauges and check the headspace.

Thanks for the insight, folks.

Trigger time, really appreciate the offer. Pretty sure my brother dropped it off at a smith yesterday...
