My 13 year old son just missed a nice buck.. Arg! Should have been an easy 70 yard shot, told him to put it center of shoulder and squeeze. Definitely a miss, watching with binos, no sound, no blood.
Trying real hard not to be pissed off for blowing it.

It happens, no reason to be upset. Just enjoy time spent with your son.

You should have been here yesterday!

Yup...happens....don’t turn it into the event that makes him not want to continue hunting... Talk thru it...did he close his eyes...was he breathing....etc....teachable moments...

My GF misses all the time. Shoots well off the sand bags at the range. Just gets really "tense" with a live animal. That's OK don't make a deal out of it.

I know.. He can shoot.. His rear arm wasnt supported and I am sure it dipped.. I saw the impact hit high..
I have always said a clean miss is better.than a bad hit. We were out a few weeks ago and he had a good buck opp but never felt like he had a good clean shot so I was proud if him for having the maturity not to take the chance.
Probably our last hunt, I am burnt out and really want him to get a good buck this year. He is a great kid and gives us no problems whatsoever.. guess I am just frustrated for.him.

We all miss and all feel bad about it. Keep him hunting.

Yup...happens....don’t turn it into the event that makes him not want to continue hunting... Talk thru it...did he close his eyes...was he breathing....etc....teachable moments... ^^^^^^ Excellent advice. I have been in this exact situation last year with my then 9 yo who missed a great buck at 20 yds. Trust me, uour son is likely beating himself up inside. More disappointed than letting on i would imagine. He likely wants it as bad for himself as he does to please/prove to you that you have taught him well. Review the process and potential areas where it may have gone wrong for him. A negative approach may discourage him from hunting in the future. When I did this with my son, I realized I totally set him up for failure. He was too short to sit in the chair and rest the gun out the window. So he either had to sit in my lap or stand up and slouch over to shoot. Rear of the gun was wavering all over the place when he shot. No wonder my son missed. This year I took a bipod and placed it under the butt end of the stock to stabilize him. He dropped a toad of a deer for our area this year at a 100yds. Teaching moments are what makes a difference for our kids. It’s how we use that time/opportunity that will impact them the most. Kudos to you guys for spending time together and enjoying the outdoors. That’s a win in and of itself. Not enough of this going on in today’s world. Keep at it dad, he’ll connect soon enough and it will be one of the best memories you two will ever share together.

Trying real hard not to be pissed off for blowing it. So I would assume that you have never missed a shot. Pretty minor thing to get upset over.

Just for good measure can you go make a quick look just in case he did it?

You may be mad, but it probably doesn't compare to the sadness and regret he is feeling. If you are showing outward anger, he is probably feeling your disappointment as well. Be supportive and tell him not to worry about it. I remember missing a deer when I was a teenager and I fixated on it for weeks and was so disappointed in myself. Luckily I had a dad that supported me and gave constructive advice.

I don't even understand the concept of getting mad at a kid for missing a shot. And who knows, he might have hit in the sweet spot above the lungs and below the backbone (but that's another discussion). Suffice to say, I've got a lot of examples of "missed" deer showing blood 3-4 hundred yards after the hit (that was a "certain" miss).
Why on earth would you get mad at a child who's trying to do something and fails? Make no mistake, you aren't the first dad or kid's sponsor I've seen get mad at a kid who's doing their best. And God forbid that person makes the foolish mistake of berating a kid or wife/gf novice in front of me. I know what I'd do, I've seen me do it.

Just for good measure can you go make a quick look just in case he did it? Happens ALL the time. Happened here on an axis a couple of weeks ago. Long interesting story.

"Mad" is probably wrong word.. He hunts, he can shoot well and has killed a lot of deer and hogs..
More like disbelief.. I try my best not beat my kids up over stuff.
We are back at it..

My grandson had a problem with picking his head up to watch a critter fall. Got it corrected, no biggie. Stay with it and talk him up. He’ll be fine.

For the record.. I didnt say anything negative to him.. just asked how he felt when the shot broke, did he feel he had a good shot, etc...
He is shooting 120g SST oit of his 6.8.. They are very leathal.
He clean missed a doe earlier in the season and connected perfectly 20 minutes earlier. He spent a lot of time on the range afterwards..
I know he felt bad and I sure wont add to it.

My 14year old missed a decent cull buck mid season. Said he was shaky cause he had to pee...yeah right. Buck fever was more like it. Made sure he looked for sign of a hit for an hour or so just so he understands not to take it lightly.

No bucks worth shooting yesterday evening. Hogs, but we held off, even though we shoot suppressed.
Spent a few hours mid day shooting and though.

Missing is part of hunting.
It’s worse when your kid misses. I’ve blamed myself in every way imaginable.
Enjoy your time with him. He will grow and have his successes, too.
