I would love to have the bores checked on 4 rifles. Anyone have a bore scope set up with a Monitor and knows what to look for? I will definitely pay for this service if I don't have to travel too far>
Think if I bought one, people would pay me to scope their bores? (Ok, stop those dirty thoughts)

While far from perfect, a 5mm borescope that plugs into a phone or computer is $20 or less on ebay.

How it shoots will tell you what you need to know. Some bores look like absolute hell through a scope, yet shoot lights out. Others can be the opposite. It would be fun to have one, but it isn’t necessary.

Those cameras you get for twelve bucks are okay for lots of things, and I'd say they're better than nothing for looking at a bore. The problem with them is they look DOWN the bore---as in "straight ahead," rather than at a ninety-degree angle and directly at the bore surface.
Buzz, I have a Lyman Borescope and I am pretty pleased with it. They can be had for less than $300 last time I checked. I think I got mine when they were on sale for about $229 a year or more back. Money well spent, IMO.

I've seen gun smiths sell a barrel job because of a "little" fire cracking, which is 100% normal. I don't worry about a bore scope.

Worry about loading better ammo, using a better scope, and being a better shooter. Keep up with round count on the barrel. Many cartridges have a "usual" shelf life.

I think we all get the point you guys are making, but sometimes you just want to look at the bore of a rifle. I couldn't say how many rifles have passed through my hands over the last fifteen years, but I've had several that just frustrated the daylights out of me. There have been a couple that never did treat me right but I hung on to them for various reasons, and after I got the Borescope I found out why they wouldn't shoot. They both got new barrels. One was bought on-line about three years ago, and I know it's always taking chances buying that way, but the other was acquired in a swap with someone here at THF. If I'd had that tool with me the day I made that trade, I could have avoided the deal (the bore was pitted from breach to muzzle, but looking down the barrel with the naked eye revealed nothing at all).
More recently I swapped for a rifle and I had the Borescope with me, and I did check it out before agreeing to the deal. The bore looked fine, and I've only fired some preliminary groups with it, but it already gave me a one-hole group (gotta LOVE a 788!) and several other tight ones.
There are legit reasons for wanting to look at a rifle's bore. I agree that you can't predict with certainty how a rifle will shoot by looking at the bore, but who wants to acquire a rifle with a pitted bore? Or just plain defective, which I think was the case with another rifle I ended up rebarreling? And while you can't predict a rifle's accuracy with a bore scope, you can sure keep an eye on one that you're already familiar with just in case things start getting out of shape.

Valid points, for sure. If I were a habitual buyer, I’d be more inclined to have one. I wish I could be a habitual buyer.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Kimber 204 with a VX-III several years ago at a LGS. The deal was too good to be true. Caught up in the "steal" of a price, I almost forgot to check the bore. When I finally remembered, I was amazed to find the first 8" or so of rifling to be non-existant!!! Probably the most shot out barrel I have ever seen. It would have been interesting to look at it through a bore scope...

Do you really think Buzz is going to buy an old rifle? Hell his new rifles won't ever pitted or shot out, and he sells them. He's the perpetual "new barrel owner". But he wants to skip real load development on a new type of bullet, it shoots like crap, and he contacts the manufacturer. Then he's worried about a damn bore scope?

JG, what is "usual shelf life" of ammo? .308 Win, excess of 5,000 round barrel life. 6.5 Creedmoor, 2500 rounds, and it's done. 6mm variants some quit at 1500 rounds. .22-250, bout 1200 rounds and I'm ordering a barrel. That's what I was meaning.

JG, I thought you were talking about ammo "shelf life", cause I have some that are over 20 years old.

JG, I thought you were talking about ammo "shelf life", cause I have some that are over 20 years old. Reckon that would last another 80 years? Bet there's some hunnert year old ammo oit there that'll shoot. My first post was a bit confusing.
