Since the duck season has wrapped up, it is time to start getting ready for the next season. When do y'all start planting your duck food sources such as rice and millet? This will be a first for me, might be a bust, but its worth a shot. Any input is great.

If you plant millet you can not hunt it for one complete year

That isn't true. You can hunt it immediately, you just can't hunt over disturbed/manipulated planted millet in the first growing season.

There is a ton of info on the web for duck food plots. The short answer for millet is the first two weeks of August. But you will find there are about a million variables and approaches. There is a federal .pdf on migratory bird baiting that is really informative. Note that many people believe the "cant hunt for the first year" interpretation. Just search on "baiting" in this forum, you'll see. Lots of people hunt over flooded fields and next to standing crops, and they are not all going to jail. https://www.fws.gov/le/waterfowl-hunting-and-baiting.html

Can you manipulate water levels? If not, it is a crap shoot.

Misinformation. You can’t plant it, and manipulate it (I.e shred it) and hunt over it the first year. After a year, if it comes back, you can shred it and hunt it. OK plants millet every year on public land for hunting, they would not do that if what you said was true.

I would not let water out if I could not pump it back in.

Can’t manipulate- but can hunt it. That’s incorrect

Start mid July and plant weekly to hedge bets. Go w BYG instead of Jap.
