What if a hog trap accidentally trapped a turkey? In theory and hypothetically, not that anybody I know actually trapped and released one unharmed.

It happens, just like getting deer in the trap. Open the door and let them out. Hope it isn’t a rodeo like trying to release a deer. The deer beat themselves up pretty good trying to get out.

My trap is modular so when I remember my tools it’s best to take the top off and let them jump out. When having to use the door I usually have to run them out. They aren’t very excited about going through a door that got them trapped in the first place.

Reason quit using my trap, took forever ta trap hog, finally got three. Started hearing the stories of deer getting in traps, & deer getting tore up, also heard they were talking bout making them illegal if had top. The large circle traps with the funnel & spring door are way to go.

Then you would have a turkey in your trap.

I catch turkeys all of the time, and deer. Letting them out isn't as bad as deer.

Nearly caught one in a live trap (varmint-sized) one time. I guess the gate wouldn’t latch because of his tail.

I have caught quite a few turkeys and released them. They get pretty rowdy and can hurt themselves but not nearly as bad as deer. Deer are wound up hyper machines and can easily break their necks or get busted up. A few years ago I designed a deer proof hog trap. It allowed the deer and turkeys and exotics to escape but hogs could not get out. Sold quite a few to places that had exotics but not enough to keep me in business.

Cut a hole in the top of the hog trap just big enough to allow a deer or turkey to get out, and only cut three sides and fold the wire back. You can leave it open all the time or open it manually to let the deer out.

Caught a deer on 3 separate occasions. One buck was in very bad shape. To the point I would be surprised if he survived much longer. A doe knocked herself out when I approached the trap so I tied it open and she eventually woke up and got out. After the that I started tying wire across the opening to keep deer out but the hogs could keep getting in. Never caught a deer after that.
Caught 3 turkeys on 1 occasion and just chased them out and they were fine.

What surprised me most about the turkey in the trap was that we don’t have turkeys around here. At least we haven’t for the decade or more that we’ve had this place. But we have a small group now, that I’ve seen at distance a couple of times. Never expected to find one in my trap. He was a whopper. 10 inch beard I’d guess.
I wonder where they came from. Limestone County doesn’t even have a turkey season, not that I’d shoot one anyway. I suppose I should call the game warden and tell him we have turkeys.

Yeah, see what he/she says. Get a picture if possible. Probably Rios that came from the west maybe or they stocked some easterns in the wrong place?

I did call the GW. He was surprised that we had turkeys though reports of turkeys had come in fro a location about 15miles from here. About 10 years ago, the GW at that time told me that turkeys and quail had been introduced to this area in 1994, but that due to fire ants and other issues, they had not reproduced enough to survive. Most likely these turkeys aren’t from that group.
The wife took pictures, but with the turkey in the trap they didn’t turn out very well. But...I do believe that there were turkey tracks at one of the feeders, so I should have pictures when I pull the SD cards.
I’ll again say that I was surprised at the size of that Tom. He was a whopper. And I don’t know if I mentioned that when I first saw the trap from a distance, there was a group outside the trap. They scattered in all directions.
Not my monkeys, not my circus...

I use corral traps with saloon doors. I put a stick in the doors. If they trigger it the hogs can still push their way in. I use 5ft panels and deer can jump out. I'm in Wimberley and this way is the only way since we have more deer then anything else here. I guess our turkeys are way to paranoid cause they never enter my traps. Coons and deer show up first most times.
The best thing ever was once I caught two sows in heat. I could tell this cause boars were fighting in the trap when I got there. I shot the boars and pulled them out. Left the sows there and kept m fed and watered. I ended up killing 14 boars off that corral trap before the sows quite drawing them in. The LO called the trap hotel California.
