Chocolate Labrador puppy turning six months old in a couple days.
He is a companion house dog, traveling and hiking buddy.
So when should he be neutered?

At least 18 months.

Gives the dog time to grow and fully mature.

Some vets will say early, some will say later. My vet told me if you do it too late though you lose several health advantages due to hormones already having been released. But give your vet a call, they'll have a better answer than any of us.

I would not trust your vet. Many push for early spay and neuter despite the new research. Do some research on your own.

The health benefits of waiting outway the benefits from doing it early. So much so that many breeders will nullify their health guarantee if done before 18 months old.

Good idea, let me discount my vet who teaches at one of the top vet schools in the country (Texas A&M) and go with the first conflicting opinion I find on the internet.

Why donít you read some of the latest studies on the subject and draw your own conclusions? That would beat blindly following one vets opinion.

Very good unbiased article.

Table at the end shows conditions and if the likelihood of getting it is increased or decreased by spaying or neutering
