I am looking for a good place to take my young boys camping/fishing during Spring Break.
I would need it to be inexpensive (HS teacher), and about 1-1.5 hours from Ft. Worth.

LBJ grasslands is close and cheap. Been awhile but from what I remember you can tent camp for free in designated areas. They have a number of small lakes and ponds that are decent fishing, lots of trails and nice country for hiking also.

Ft. Griffin between Albany and Throckmorton is nice and isn't too far.

Ft. Griffin

Ft. Richardson in Jacksboro is also nice.

Fort Richardson

Also a plenty of fishing spots on Hubbard Creek lake.

Make your reservation early! It is a great park!

X2 Both should meet your cost and distance parameters but Meridian would probably be better fishing. Not sure about the fishing at DVSP.

I am a retired educator myself. I fully understand the $$$ question and activities for the kids. My solution was to camp in the National Forest. We normally stayed in the Hunter Camp along the river in the Alabama Creek WMA portion of the Davey Crockett National Forest.

It is rough camping without electricity or running water. During hunting season chemical toilets are usually present.

Luck favors the prepared mind.
