 Vortex and Leupold ring screw tension

Ok, got my Fatmax torque wrench and am about to get to torquing various screws to their recommended tension. Vortex recommends 18 in/lbs for their ring screws and Leupold recommends 15 - 17 in/lbs. I have a question for you serious shooters, and you know who you are. Do you fellows torque to the recommendation, or do you vary for any reason? If you do vary, what is your reasoning?

1" tube 20 in/lbs
30mm tube 25 in/lbs
34mm tube 25 in/lbs
Works, never caused any trouble.

Gotta say...I like the FatWrench. Worked great. I went with about 18 in/lbs, though I can see the joy in using 20 pounds, since that’s a clear mark. The process gave me a chance to adjust the reticle that had been a teeny bit canted.
Decided to just leave the Leupold VariX-III 4.5-14 on the 223. The repaired Vortex will sit on the shelf, I suppose.

Not speaking as an expert shooter... but here's my perspective as one who works with fasteners.
The torque recommendation if available by the mfg should be followed as it "should" be based on the fastener (size, thread pitch and materials). If the rings are manufactured correctly - geometry, the threads are by far the weakest link.
You want just enough torque to keep the fastener in tension. Too much and you will yield the material or worse, strip the female thread.
Keep in mind any manufacturer recommendation for using a thread locking compound as well as it could change the friction properties of the fastener.

It depends... but you don't ever want to find out as once a fastener gets over-torqued it will never be able to retain the tension you need. Again... perfect world... and most of what I'm talking about is really applicable for a much larger fastener application. Just look at head bolts and gasket compression and the sensitivity to retained tension. And you're right.. its not a great amount... and all probably within the accuracy of some torque wrenches. But it is something to consider.
