I started a thread last week asking why the Nosler Accubonds weren't expanding that I was using in my .300 RUM. I got several responses to jump up in weight and shoot something heavier than the 150 grainers I was using. I found some Berger VLD Hunting 168 grain and was curious at everyone's opinion of this weight/bullet is??

If your main concern is bullet performance, and you are hunting/shooting at a maximum of 300 yards or so, why are you so concentrating on bullets designed to perform and expand at long distances? Too many people fail to grasp the obvious. Pick the game you are shooting, the range you are shooting at, and then choose your bullet. Whitetails at under 300 yards with a .300 RUM? 180 grain Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX.

You are trying to drag race to the grocery store, when the pickup will get you there just fine.

I think the responses to jump up in weight were misguided, they were trying to convince you that if your shooting a 300 rum you need to be shooting high bc bullets at long range. If you want a big nasty hole then light and fast should do it. Try a 150 grain ballistic tip or a 150 grain sierra gameking etc. Sure the 168 will do the same probably.

You're still going to be too fast. Give me a .300 RUM and tell me to load it with a Berger VLD Hunting, and I'm going to pick a 210 gr.

That's the bullet I put in a friend's .300 Win Mag, and he keeps telling me it's Thor's hammer on everything he's hit with it.

Too fast? Faster = more expansion heavier = slower velocity and more penetration. He already has penetration, he is looking for a traumatic DRT, high velocity and any readily expanding bullet will give him what he is looking for and a hell of a mess on the gutting rack, but he shot the other one in his other post sternum to but hole so I doubt he cares.

I think a 168 grain Berger in a .300 RUM will be a disaster. Any frangible bullet will be in that weight range and speed. Get something tougher or slow it down.

Well, chit man, I have some 30 cal sabots we can put a 55 grain SP .224" bullet in, and rock this beoch!! 6000 fps and minus 1 moa come up at 300 yards, since it's so fast. When you push a bullet that fast, it actually rises!!

There ya' go. Shoot them square in the leather cherry and his goals will be accomplished...

I've had great luck with heavy for caliber Berger VLD-Hunting. So, yes, slow it down.

180 gr, 7mm 2950 fps MV.
210 gr, .30 cal 2880 fps MV

Yep. Slow it down.

A heavier bullet can be made to shoot great as well. That only needs a search for the right powder charge for your barrel and bullet.

I'm just curious, why would you want to put a 168 VLD-H in a 300 RUM? [/quote]

Only reason Im asking is because I found a decent deal on some and based off what I took from the opinions of my previous thread, they're heavier than the 150's I've been using. I shot a couple boxes of factory HSM ammo in the 168's before and they did fine I guess (killed what I shot with them). I'm just getting into reloading and am wanting others opinion on if the 168 VLD-H is what I should be changing to from an Accubond. I'm all ears on recommendations from anybody. Is it not a good round to use in a .300 RUM?

Well, the VLD-H bullets are known for being fragmentatious in normal calibers. I know in 308 and 30-06 a 168 VLD-H makes some nasty wound channels. Skip the 300 Win Mag and Wby Mags and go right to the RUM where you can push a 168 about 3300-3400 fps. That bullet will have massive amounts of fragmentation, and most likely come apart and greatly limit your penetration. It's a bullet that will come apart and light weight for RUM. Most RUM's that I load for will be in the 200+ grains, with most being a 210 VLD, 212 ELD-X, or similar bullet. Some Berger 215 and 230 Hybrids. Also, RUM's are a very finicky round to load for. They are very picky on the accuracy node they like. Increasing the bullet weight, I have found, helps with improving accuracy.

I got a range report from a good friend that shot a nice deer at just over 600 yards with a 300 Win Mag with a 212 ELD-X, muzzle of about 2920 fps. He said there was a racquetball sized exit wound with massive internal damage and mush. With a high BC of the 212 ELD-X and how it performs on game, that's a really good option.

The Berger VLDs perform best within a certain velocity “window” — 2800 fps down to 1800 fps. If you push them too fast, on light bodied game such as whitetail, not enough resistance is met for them to expand reliably. The 300 RUM simply pushes them too fast at conventional hunting distances. You need to slow the 168s down or step up to a heavier bullet.

Thank you sir. This is what I was looking for. I appreciate the input and recommendation. Hadn't ever been a Hornady fan but I will look into the ELD-X bullet. May lean toward a 210 VLD since I've had a little experience with that bullet in the HSM ammo.

Every bullet I ever shot more speed = more expansion. Have a buddy that did all his hunting this season with a 300RUM and 168 betters with zero complaints.

You have zero experience with a VLD-Hunting, and three of us that do have experience with it, are telling how the cow eats the cabbage with that bullet. Accept it, learn from it, and quit arguing about it.

And I'm not arguing against you at all. You think a heavy for caliber bullet would do a "better" job and so do I.

He is looking for a traumatic bang flop huge energy transfer. A lighter fast bullet that readily expands excels at that. I find it comical how yal are trying to say a 168 in a 300 rum wont work, sure you can push a much heavier bullet, but it will shoot the light ones just as well.

Have you seen what Bergers do at very high impact velocities? Are you aware how fast a .300 RUM can push a 168 grain bullet?

Serious questions, by the way.

Very aware one of my very good friends has been filling MLD tags and hunting all over texas and mexico this season with... you guessed it a 300 rum and 168 bergers this year. I looked at him kind of funny when he said it too. It is not a combination I would want to shoot at things I intend to eat, but if you want a big wound and a bang flop it think it would be a fine combination, which to me is what the op is looking for.

It's why I stopped using Ballistic Tips from my 7STW, speed was too fast and very frangible. I blew a basket ball sized hole on the entry side of a slightly quartered trophy impala and almost cost me 2 grand but found it a half mile from the hit site. And for the VLD_H, I used it last year on a 9 pointer, entry hole was the size of a pin hole, but in reality I could not even see it on the skin after skinning, and exit was caliber sized, did not expand. I love Accubonds on my magnum rifles. I also use Ballistic Tips on the other rifles with speed less than 3,000 fps. Nosler rocks, haven't used the ELDX on game yet, but I will, very soon this year.

Do you know if he’s had any blow up at impact and fail to penetrate and kill in a timely manner?
