So I have been feeding corn for a couple of years. Heard a lot about protein feeders...

What’s the benefits? How much do you throw? I have seen gravity chutes and feed trough type, any one better than the other?

Anybody have any empirical data about benefits of adding protein to the mix?

I put a protein feeder up last

I put a protein feeder up last year on Jan 27. I had deer eating out of it that night and had 20 deer in my feed pen in one pic. Made no difference come deer season except I would have 10 deer at a time during the night instead 2 or 3. They would be gone between about 6am and 10pm. I got a BUNCH of pics this year though.

I have been running 2 parts academy protein and one part corn....

I am convinced it helps. The next season after starting the horns were darker and the hair on does and bucks was more shiny. Seemed like overall better health. I mix it in my spin feeder, if you put straight proteinin a spin feeder it will swell up and clog it. I know! It is worth the money imo.

I assure you protein helps. we have a cross fenced ranch HF and low fence. We feed year round protein changing from 20% to 17% thru year. During antler growth we use 20% with an added mineral pk from mill, then changing to 17% once antlers have dropped velvet. We feed only corn on our LF side yr round. With good population of deer there is still a remarkable difference in the native deer on protein and native deer on corn. Be prepared to put some money into feed once they hit it, We use the timed protein feeders to help controls costs and from turning the deer into poop machines, they will overeat and not forage as much. The release pastures with high end genetics are also supplemented with alfalfa

Yes protein makes a difference. I started protein April last year on new place and use The Hammer timed feeders. Filled one up and went across a canyon to fill another and could still see the first one and deer were all ready on it (less than 10 minutes) and feeders had been empty from corn for a couple of months. Time release if you cannot afford free flow 24/k7 allows you to set timers to open and close thus eliminating the all night feeding.

If you believe in vitamins and protein supplements, then you will probably feel better about putting out protein for your deer. But in all reality, they will get more protein out of the food they eat naturally if you have decent rains then anything you put out for them. For the protein feeds to work, you really need to remove all other food sources to the deer, and keep them in a small pen. They wont be as healthy, but they will have much larger racks.

Look into a timered protein feeder that will allow you feed how much you want and then feed year round. Year round is the key to keeping feed out when the deer need it not when you want it out there.

I started feeding protein a couple years ago. I was feeding only corn beforehand. Since protein started, I have seen my herd double, and just last week, it doubled again. Of course I didn't grow them from protein, they were already there, but they're coming in for something, maybe the protein. I've always had a group of tan WT that I have seen for years and watched the bambis grow up, it has grown to about 25 or so, but in the past several days, I have a huge herd of dark, almost black bodied WT coming in too.

It's interesting that they don't travel together, but when they show up at the same time, it's like a family reunion.

We ran 4 - 55 gallon drum feeders on 300 acres. In drought times they would empty them in just over a week. Normal consumption during summer every 3 weeks. If in spring or good wet conditions would last a month or longer sometimes.

$360 a month on one feeder? Scaring me into running one feeder! We got 8 corn feeders on 1,100 acres. Would like to run 3 or 4 protein feeders. We got some big deer but they go to neighbors in the fall for some reason.
