Good looking buck Don. About how much does a large buck weigh, same with doe?

I have never taken a large Axis Buck. Not that I haven't had the chance but I only shoot does, spikes and two year olds because that is all I can load by myself. Last year I shot a Doe and weighted her. 110# on the hoof and and 62# skinned, gutted and head and feet removed.

One of the best animals to eat in Texas IMO.

His antlers look to be starting off a little crocked. Last year he did not grow a secondary point on his left side. Wonder if it will be the same this year. He is not here by the house with the Ibex females now but in a larger pasture. So I probably will not get a picture a week this year.

Hard to accurately judge in velvet, but looks like he is going to have incredible mass this year. Amazing how well he is coming along. Does he have access to protein or some of the Ibex' feed, or is that just natural development?

It is mostly natural unless the Ibex are not around at feeding time then he might get some supplement. I also not have a younger Axis buck that jumped in. He was a spike and is now growing his second set of antlers. I will get a picture of him when I can.

Is he a "house buck" i.e. He gets a pass or do you have a target age before he's available for harvest

I like looking at him and if he wants to live out his life here he is welcome to do it. If he wants to leave he knows how he got in and can take the same way out.

He is a very nice looking animal, glad he gets to hang out and get his pictures taken, thumbs up.

I don't know which is more impressive....that phenomenal rack or his girth!! That is one healthy mature Axix buck.

He sure does look thick, must be eating good!

They are just big animals. If it doesn't start raining soon he may start loosing some weight. I think he is about to quit growing his antlers. They look like they are starting to shrink in diameter. I don't think he will ever be much bigger than he will be this year. He is just an average Axis.

With good rainfall, he may surprise you over the next few years. Sure is nice to have a 'walking trophy' in your pasture. It's hard to believe horns grow so fast over four months. Three prongs on each side with long brows. I think he might just be a little more than average. Keep your photos comin'. Hope you don't mind me showing again here. Beautiful animal.

He has been missing lately then a couple of days ago I saw him and he had broke one of his front legs at the joint.

That is why we kill them, no such thing as preservation with critters only conservation. Pretty cool pics tho!

He will most likely survive unless coyotes can run him up into a fence corner. It was not bleeding so he most likely won't get an infection. Quite a few years back my son shot an Axis Buck LF that when we processed it found that at sometime in its life had broken the big bone in one of his hams. The bone slid past itself about 3 inches and then fused itself back together. So now one of its back legs was shorter than the other. I messed up and did not keep that bone. Would have been an interesting conversation piece.

Haven't seen him in a while. Has a real good limp now.

We had an axis get shot in the front leg by a hunter that was a supposed marks man. That deer disappeared and we assumed was dead until it showed up on camera 2 years later, his horns were all jacked up. For the most part he was able to avoid cameras but we would catch him about twice a year. He was offered as a freebee to all hunters, 4 years later a guest finally got him. He was severally diminished in body mass and antlers.
I am guessing that your's will be hunted soon.

As long as he stays here he will not be hunted.

Glad he survived so far. Maybe he'll stay around & not jump too many more fences. Looking forward to more pics - it'll be interesting to see how his horns develop next year.

Thank you for posting the pics. I have been watching this post since last year and it helps me out tremendously to estimate my axis's growth between my trips to the lease and a paid hunt that I went on. Had one that was exactly on the same schedule. Haven't seen him in the last couple of trips but I'm sure he will be running the does in a few weeks. What a great deer and thanks again.

It would be nice to have him taxidermied after he passes.

He is starting to use the bad leg a little. He will put a little weight on it. The joint is now stiff and will not bend. But it could be worse. A stiff leg beats a bullet in the gut.

Hey Don........you think it happened jumping the high fence back in?

I really don't know what happened.He would usually come to where I feed the Ibex males. Then I didn't see him for a few weeks. Then he showed up with the broke leg. Either s fence or something got him. But it is a long way from his heart so he will make it. Maybe not very fast so if he stays around here close to the house he should be OK.

He is getting around pretty good now. Can't run but is walking good.
