I'm building a 12" AR-10, got a green mountain barrel w/ 1/10 twist carbine length gas sys. I'm looking for the heaviest bullet I can shoot out of it, main purpose will be smacking pigs. I've been shooting 168 A maxs out of my 16" AR-10 but haven't had great results on pigs, works great on deer though. I do like the nosler BTs out of my .300BLK so i'd like to use that bullet, 180gr or 220gr even if it'll shoot it.

In a 1:10", it will shoot as heavy as you want to go, that will still fit in an AR-10 magazine. You could shoot a 200+ grain bullet, it would be going very slow. But, the question becomes where does the velocity fall off enough that you lose terminal performance (expansion and hydrostatic shock) and it be an effective killing bullet.

I like to have at least 2200 or more fps at bullet impact to get good expansion. More if I can get it. Knowing this, we can work the numbers backwards. I know a 150/155 grain will do 2750 fps in a 20" AR-10. Drop this down to 12", and you will lose about 240 to 300 fps, maybe a little more. This would put your muzzle velocity at 2450 fps with a 150 grain bullet. That's doable. Now if you dropped down to a 125 grain, like a 125 SST or 125 BT, I know these run 3030 fps in a 20" AR-10 (this is what we night hunt with). Put that in a 12", account for about 350 fps loss, and you will run about 2680 fps, maybe 2700 fps. I would go with a 125 grain in a 12" to keep my speeds up and get some good terminal performance.

Also, you have to think about powder burn in an SBR. The 125 grain loads we run is with a faster burning powder. In a gas gun shooting suppressed, this will minimize how dirty the rifle will get after multiple rounds. If you put a slow burning powder with a heavier bullet, the powder will not have as a complete burn as a faster burning powder, and will increase how dirty the round is. So, my 125 grain SST load we run is with a faster burning powder to minimize how dirty your rifle gets.

i shoot the your 125 BTs out of my 8" .300blk with great results, i guess my purpose for this build was to put more weight on target (in a similar size platform) IE 168s or bigger, more like 180s if doable. and more than likely be buying the ammo from you, i see you sell the 180 sierra SP but in subs, could you make a 180gr bullet go super sonic out of the 12" barrel? (suppressed of course)

Ok. On your comment above, what did you mean by: "I've been shooting 168 A maxs out of my 16" AR-10 but haven't had great results on pigs"

My son also shoots a lot of my 308 168 amax bulk ammo. He shot a spike with this ammo a few weeks ago with his 20" Tikka. Spike was DRT and didn't take a step. But the bullet exit was decent, but not as open as I'd like. I'll be dropping him down to the 155 VLD-H to gain some speed and expansion.

A 180 grain in a 24" 308 bolt gun should run ~2650. If you run a 180 grain in a 12" AR-10, you will lose about 400-450 fps (25 fps per inch, and 100 fps going to a gas gun), and speeds should be around 2200-2250 fps. You are right on the low end of velocity to allow the bullet to have some expansion. It's worth a try, if you want. The penetration would be very good, and how much expansion you get we'd have to see.

When running the 300 blk out, I shot some 150 and 165 grain bullets as fast as I could get them. The 150's were about 2030 fps out of my bolt gun, and the 165's were about 1800 fps. I know neither of these bullets expanded on pigs. I shot a pig with the 165 and got a clean pass through with a .308" exit hole, so I dropped down to the 150. I shot several pigs with the 150 Nosler BT, and exit was about the same. The penetration was great, as all bullets exited, but there was no expansion and minimal hydrostatic shock. All the pigs died due to good shot placement. But they all ran some distance before expiring. I now run the 115 Bergers (as of the last month or so) and they do well at 2450 fps in my bolt gun. For night hunting or general hunting, I have used a lot of the 125 SST or BT, and they perform very well in the blk out. At 2350 fps, I get good expansion and almost all animals drop. So, that kind of gives you an ideal on velocities and expansion.

Also, you should see a pig get hit with a 125 grain SST from a 308 AR-10 20" at 3022 fps! It's pretty sweet!

they work great on deer, but on the pigs seems like maybe not enough penetration or over expansion, i've had to shoot some several times to get them down/dead.

sounds like i'll do the 125 SSTs, i would like to be able to reach out and touch one if i have to. i bet they're nasty, i've blown out shoulders on pigs with the 125 in .300blk i can't imagine what the .308 will be like

Ok. Where do you aim? Behind the shoulder?

I ask, because my aiming point for a pig is high shoulder or high neck (or sometimes head shot if available). It will be forward of the shoulder and higher up. I want to drop the pigs so I don't have to chase them. Once I changed my point of aim, and bullets hit high shoulder or high neck, they drop in their tracks. This is with every caliber I own, mainly my 300 blk out for the last 4-5 years. Give me a 270 Win or 308, and it's a DRT shot for sure.

The load I run with the 125 SST in 308 is exactly 3022 fps in a 20" AR-10 suppressed. It has worked well so far. I am about to go to a 16" or 17" 308 bolt gun my self, and run either the 125's or 155's. I haven't decided. I'm in the building phase right now for it.

If you want more penetration, use something other than an SST or MatchKing. I would recommend a 150 Accubond or Partition so you always get violent expansion and penetration.

what are your thoughts on the 168 ABLR for something like this? I know it has a bit more weight but the BC is nice...

It's a nice bullet but its fussy when you want to make it shoot. I gave up on it for my 7 Mag and stuck to the 160 Accubond.

No, I'm kicking the tires right now. I'm still playing with the 7mm-300 Win Mag right now.
