I started the Dove fields for 2018. Mowing, then chisel plow, then fertilizer, then disc...Then pray for timely rains this Spring and Summer. Going to be a busy 2 weeks.

Half done, hopefully finish Friday or Saturday, depends on this weather coming in. Getting a real good deep turn, just the right amount of moisture in the soil. Doves are pouring in on the freshly plowed fields, hopefully they stick around and do lots of breeding this Spring and Summer.

Started chisel plowing my 30 acres of fields this week. Gonna follow up with disking, fertilize overseeding and drag.

2 questions Stompy... have you found it really helps to mow first before breaking up the ground? And what fertilizer are you using?

Yes, I like to mow before I disc. I have found that if the weeds are high it clogs my disc. I tested the soil and putting out nitrogen at 60lbs per acre. If you chisel before you disc you may not have to mow. But I have had the weeds clog the chisel before too, can cause the chisel to ride too high.

Are you planting this time of year, or just getting ready for it? I tried to plant sorghum and let my wheat go to seed for dove but the stinking pigs leveled it.

I'm not planting anything, my Sunflowers and Dove weed come up volunteer, as long as I turn the ground and get a couple of freezes on it..

By the way, I've tried to let my wheat head out for Dove but the pigs, turkey and deer ate it all long before dove season too.

Already have guys asking about your opener; that's what happens when you have excellent hunts each year. texas
