I've got a group of hogs coming in about twice a week on my cameras that are all or almost all marked alike. What would cause this coloration.

I agree with the Hampshire ancestry comment. If I remember from Ag class correctly, the belt trait is an Autosomal dominant. That means that there is a 50-50 chance it will be passed on. If they are breeding each other, then the probability is higher.

I was told that an old pig farmer...the man not the pig was old. Came out one day and said he was tired of pigs and opened up all the gates to his pens and ran them all out. I don't know what kind of pigs he was raising, but he was supposedly about 3 miles from me. Did it three or four years ago.

the county commissioner of Haskell told us there was a swine farm back in the days

owner can't maintain them or whatever and let them all go

2010, I personally witnessed a pack of at least 75-100 in. a field across the street from his house
about 400 yards away. The lady that owns the place has a house there and refused
to let anyone hunt on her place.

it was a beautiful sight .... for a hog hunter

Funny how many pig farmers "just let them all go" instead of selling the pigs for $$.

Once upon a time, there were dozens of fairly large hog farms fairly close to here.

I remember at one point in time when the market tanked and pigs were not worth hauling to market.
Most of those farmers barely managed to keep their farm and a few lost them.
Luckily my parents retired and we had closed down our small hog operation about 2 years before it happened.

I do a few farmers turned some if not all of their stock lose.
I think a few were hoping to recapture them later if the market ever rebounded.
It didn't take long for the pigs to kick in the survival instinct.
Don't know how much this fed the current invasion but sure it didn't help.

I mean you gotta figure, there are only a couple breeds of ALL BLACK domestic pigs. Most are white, couple two tone models and then your mottled/speckled variety(old heritage breeds). So it would make sense that natural selection favored a black pig, just for camo purposes. Then you have the occasional release of domestic pigs, escapees, so on so forth that contribute the different colors. Like a couple of said, I am sure a sounder breeding back into itself will just continue the color of the original members. I guess not to many predators in texas are capable of taking a big pig, so once they get some weight on em they only have us to worry about. Be interesting to see if that sounder gradually goes black over the next few generations or if they keep that color. Neat either way!

Any color will revert to a dark color through generations in the wild enough

I have a black and white boar that I observed (on cam) from when he's 150 lb stud
to over 300+ lb handsome monster, with perfect set of long tusks 4-5" and perfect curled upper lips

had the most muscular body I've ever seen on a hog (he lives on top of a canyon / mini mountain )

I considered him to be the prettiest boar on my place and hunted hard for him with no luck.... he's too smart

I've caught him sneaking down wind of me several times

he comes down to court the ladies in early spring and early winter then goes back to being loner
up on the canyon

I've become intimate with his offsprings for 3 generations
half will be black and white, other half black/brown/yellow/gray

one of his black and white offspring is now in the 200+ range
and getting to be like him

he was the Most Interesting Hog on my place and one that
I've invested a lot of cam time with

good luck with him! Or at the very least, here is to hoping his boy ends up as pretty as he is, just a tad less smart. I had a really nice orangeish black spotted boar show up on cam once, haven't seen him since. I haven't hog hunted really at all, but with deer season wrapping up I am about to shift my focus.

Wow. That is nut. Obviously has some farm in them but if that long ago, surprised they look like that still.

In the early 1970's the hog market really bottomed out. It wasn't worth hauling the hogs to the auction, quite a few were just let go to fend for themselves. Before that, you rarely saw a feral hog in Runnels county, now they are pests.

Yep, there were a lot of colorful targets in the late 70's when I first started hunting them.
It wasn't too uncommon to get one with earmark during that time either.

My grandfather talks about when he was a kid they would let pigs put in white oak bottom and then have a big round up. I guess it worked but I'm sure a lot didn't get recovered.
