I feel like if you are spending more than 20$ for a box of ammo you are succumbing to excellent marketing tactics. A 180 grain core lokt will kill any animal in the world. Interesting. Depends on the caliber for pricing. A 180 grain Core Lokt will do it all, huh? Interesting! If all you ever bought and shot were core lokt's, from an ammo perspective, you are missing out. If all you need is a cheap bullet hitting close to your aim at 100 yards, it will work. For the shooter who wants a premium bullet with much tighter tolerances on their ammo that shoots much better and is tuned to their rifle, good ammo is a must! There is a world of difference from Core Lokt quality to a good hand load. Now if you could re-address that without long range in mind what would your opinion be? I'd be willing to bet that yellow and green box kills more deer than any other bullet every year. My guns shoot them excellent at the ranges I have shot them at animals. And it always does the job. Sometimes a little to good.

I'm pretty due chad was talking about reaching out and shooting.
I kniw what you mean about to good with the yellow and green box ammo doing to good. Sometimes a perfect pass through other times looks a cannon shot the animal! Lol

I've wondered about Barnes. Good to know. Barnes bullets are a different animal. If you hit central nervous system anything will kill them DRT stone dead. In general barnes have a good reputation for little expansion, little shock, and long lean blood trails when behind the shoulder/heart and lung shots are taken. They shine when you hit heavy bone and or are shot at high velocity, think 22-250, 257 wby etc. and light for caliber. Yep. If you’re gonna shoot TSX or TTSX make sure you’re light for caliber and pushing it fast. Loaded a 165 TSX for a 308, shot a deer, exit was about the size of a dime. They were accurate out of that rifle but better be pushing them fast if you want results on soft tissue.

For my deer/medium game rifles .270 and above, I use whatever it shoots best between any good cup and core bullet. On the rare occasions I can’t find one that it shoots well I venture out to AccuBonds, Partitions. For deer/medium game rifles below .270, I like the TSX or whatever other good mono metal the rifle likes. I would also not hesitate to use an AccuBond or Partition. For elk, moose, bear, I use whatever the rifle shoots best between AccuBonds, Partitions, and TSX. I don’t mind stepping down a little in weight with the TSX. I have a higher opinion of the TSX than some on here have. I have staked a few hunts of a lifetime on them and have never been disappointed. They always penetrate and cause a helluva wound channel no matter where you shoot an animal in my experience. Everything I have shot with them seems pretty “shocked” and either fell right there or didn’t go far - which is pretty important in the mountains. IMO always penetrating is a non-negotiable starting point on tough game. If I ever hunt Cape Buffalo, I will use the TSX or Swift A-Frame on top followed by a magazine of solids. For African plains game, see list above.
I’m not saying there are not a ton of other options just as good, but that’s just my little “system”.
I don’t like any frangible type bullet for anything but varmints. Though I shoot a ton of varmints, I’m not a varmint hunter, so they just get shot with whatever is in the rifle I have at the time.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I’m a fan of Seirra Gamekings in everything. The only exception is the 22-250. I like the 45gr TSX in the 250. Scooting at around 4000FPS. I started loading it after I had a BT blow up on a hogs head and just knock him out. Every deer and hog I’ve shot with the TSX never took another step. I’ve only recovered one from a deer I shot last year. It was perfectly mushroomed and weighed the same as it did when it came out of the barrel. He was neck shot and I found the bullet half way down his spine. Ruined a little strap but not much.

TTSX have worked well for me, but I will not use a TSX ever again for anything. There is a notable difference in the consistency between the two opening up. Partitions work well and provide consistent terminal effects. Either one should work for virtually any type of hunting. As 68A notes above, go light for the caliber. Impact speed needs to be above 2000 fps, but that is true for most bullets too for best performance.

I've killed 40 deer with Federal Fusion, but never get extremely tight groups at the range from them.

When I brought up my choice of the Barnes TTSX, I forgot to mention that it fits the type of shots I take. I have never been one for the behind the shoulder shots because I am not thrilled about tracking. Of course, with hogs, I do the behind-the-ear thing like everybody recommends. On deer, I play it safe and shoot them in the lower part of the neck just in case the targeted deer moves right when I shoot.
The 270 and 308 have been sitting in the safe since for the last 5 seasons I have preferred my 6.5x284 followed by the 7mm-08 and 6.5 Swede. Those scoot along pretty fast, especially since my shots are usually less than 120 yards. I also like that there really isn't much ruined meat since you don't have a bunch of lead shrapnel. I am patient and wait for a nice broadside presentation except for the buck I shot after Christmas. He came to the feeder but when I put the scope on him, he had turned and was facing right at me. He knew something was up, so I put the crosshairs right under his chin and he dropped like a rock at 105 yards. Sure is nice when you can drive the pickup right alongside them!
No prayer in school....What's next, no thinking in church? It's not just about pie in the sky when you die. It's also about steak on your plate while you wait!

VLD’s have treated me better this year than any other billet I’ve ever shot. Two big mule deer DRT. They gave me almost as good of results year. I believe they really shine at high velocities. Last year 185’s at 2560fps we’re as good as any bullet I’ve ever used taking a muley and a hog. The hog was running and wasn’t hit in a place where I would have expected a quick kill. He was DRT. This year 130’s at 3225fps we’re flat out deadly.
