Probably picking up a Tikka t3 Lite stainless in 300 wsm. Heard horror stories about the recoil. Any advice (if true) how to tame it?

Never shot a 300wsm but have shot 300wm a bunch and if memory serves me, both will launch a 180 gr bullet at the same speed. Tikkas are good rifles but tend to be on the light side. THINK about it!!

I’m not trying to be a tough guy, but I’ve never shot a rifle that was too much recoil in a hunting situation. And that includes .300wby and .50 Beowulf. If it’s a hunting rifle, you likely won’t shoot it more than once or twice at a time. You should be fine.

I'm with you. After it is sighted in it will at most be shot a few times a year. Once to verify zero and the rest on game.

Is $577 NIB a fair price for a lefty?

I bet sighting in wont be much fun.

I have one. Shooting targets I have a lead sled. Shooting an animal you don’t really feel the recoil anyway.

You can get a barrel threaded for $75 or so

Timed brakes cost more, because it requires more time. I think that scenario is $100-$150. I am waiting on a reply from a gunsmith friend.

The APA brakes have been the best I have used for recoil reduction.

With any brake intended for use in the field, choose one with gas venting to the sides, not down, to avoid dust, dirt, and leaves blowing up in a big cloud. Did that one time and that brake was removed after one shot.

Jeff, I didn't realize they were available for smaller barrels. The Gen II Micro Bast**d shows it'll work on a barrel diameter down as small as .575"

Amarillo Hunter, those are designed to be timed by you. So instead of paying for a timed brake, you could just pay for basic threading, and time the APA yourself.

Or, if you prefer the slim profile of the Harrel's, you could pay the gunsmith for a timed brake. Either way, you are out about the same money.

Just might have to pick one up. If I do...what factory ammo for elk/nilgai. I believe it has a 1-11" twist. I'm pretty sure it will shoot 180's accurartely, but what about the 200's?

Buy a few choices of high quality ammo, and find the one the rifle shoots best. Once you've narrowed that down, go get as much of the same stuff, with the same lot number. You could sell, in the Trading Post, the ammo your rifle did not like. Re-zero to the new lot number of ammo.

Not sure why you bought a rifle you thought would be too light to be comfortable to shoot, but you can "make it heavier" by looking at the weight of various rings (plus on the Tikka you have your choice of just rings that fit directly into the action dovetail or rings and mounts, which would be heavier still) and then there is the scope. Scopes weigh from about 11 oz. to 20 oz. so you can increase the weight tremendously that way.

There is no way in hell I would install a muzzle brake on a hunting rifle.

Someone just reported that their Superlite in 7mm RM weighed 7 pounds 11 ounces with some unidentified scope. The .300 WSM would weigh slightly less, but I wouldn't think that it would be too light to be uncomfortable.

A brake is unnecessary. The recoil will not be anything that would present a problem in a hunting rifle.

Recoil gets in way too many folks’ heads because of all the talk about it. A lot of that talk is mixed up with recreational, target, and/or long-range shooting - where recoil can present issues for several reasons that have nothing to do with using a rifle for hunting.

Also, lots of people act like little tittybabies.

Just picked up a Tikka t3 lite stainless in 300 wsm (friend of a friend of a friend of an uncle, from a cousin...lol). $400 shot three times.

Now to figure out a factory round for a set it and forget about it. Nilgai/elk/deer in that order.
