What are some good camera choices for taking photos of deer at 100 yards? My phone cameras fail miserably at this.

I have Cannon powershot 50x HS some of these are just screen shots of the LCD and others I actually downloaded them . They are 75 yards to 300yards

I recently played with Nikon Coolpix B700 and liked it a lot. The Bluetooth ability makes the lazy non-uploaders like me have no excuse for screen shots...

Does optical zoom mean the front of the lens moves forward away from the camera body when you use the zoom?

Yes. Then digital zoom takes over from there. Digital zoom is not as clear, but still not bad at all.

I have 2 Canon cameras, the Powershot 160 and the Canon Powershot ELPH 160. The first is listed above, it is larger and has more capability, the latter is a high grade pocket size point and shoot that takes great pics. I carry the latter around like most people carry a cell phone, it fits in my T shirt pocket.

I have the Canon SX50, and it's my third Canon SX camera. I sold the first one, the SX10 to a friend, and bought the SX30, which my wife now uses. I've had the SX50 since it came out about 3 or 4 years ago. It's been awesome. Back in the day of 35mm, I used to carry three lenses with me in a camera bag, along with the one on my camera. Now it's just the camera and a spare battery. On a cruise on the Med, my wife and I took over 7,000 pictures. On our trip to South Africa, we took over 5,000 pictures. Just get a big 16 gig card and you never have to worry about how many pictures you take. I learned a long time ago that if you take ten pictures of the same thing, one might turn out good, if you take more, the odds of a great picture increase dramatically!!!!

I can take pictures of the craters on the moon, to the wings on a dragon fly with this camera!!! We used it as a spotting scope when hunting Vaal Rhebuckk in South Africa. Me and my PH both had 10x Swarvoski binoculars, and the camera was able to zoom us in closer to the animals then we could see with the binoculars!!!

All these pictures are well into the digital zoom of the camera. After 50x, it's all digital. You lose a fair amount of the clarity uploading to a site like this, but the originals print out really nice. I never use a tripod, but will rest on something to get as steady as I can, especially with the moon pictures. With animals, it's usually a quick pic to make sure I got it, then I try to get a better picture and keep taking pictures as long as they are there. I can easily take 20 to 40 pics of the same animal and delete all of them except one.

That's kind of a high price for what will be very occasional use by me. What do you guys think of this much cheaper Canon SX530? It seems to have the same zoom and pixel size.

I just looked it up on Amazon and it seems like a bare bones version of the SX50. I expect to get ten years out of my camera, and then I will probably get another one because I expect them to be so much better by then that I just have to upgrade. For me, taking pictures in the off season is a fun substitute to hunting. Finding the animals, getting close enough for the pic, and then trying to get the best picture possible is a lot of fun. But not just animals, it's fun going after all sorts of things.

Amazon has the SX50 for $272 and the SX530 for $249. To me, it's a no brainier to spend a few extra bucks for more features!!

That $272 is for a used camera as far as I can tell. I would certainly buy a new one at that price.

The SX60 is the update of the SX50. I have the SX50.

I also have the SX50. It is a great camera especially for someone like me that knows squat about cameras.

Man my wife got me little clip on lens works pretty good on my I phone.

I wound up buying a NOS SX530 for $169.

Congratulations. Something that I've found to get extra sharp pictures is to push the button down about halfway when taking a picture and watch the viewfinder focus before pushing it down all the way.
