But I’m tickled pink. Can’t wait to drop the hammer on a pig or deer

.357 mag Henry Big Boy steel 16” barrel
Henry picatinny scope vase
TPS 30mm TSR low rings
Athlon talos btr 1-4x24 mil/mil scope w/illuminated reticle

The athalon scope is exceptionally clear. Noticeably clearer than my Nikon Prostaff 7. It was $169 from cameraland. I’m extremely impressed so far just looking through it in the backyard. It’s certainly more “tactical” than I needed for a lever gun, and I wasn’t particularly looking for a mil/mil scope for this gun, but on a value scale, it is so feature packed, it was hard to pass up. I’ll give a better report once I get to shoot it, but I would guess there will be more Athlon scopes in my future.

Also, if you guys need any optics, give Doug from cameraland NY a call. He also recommended a set of Minox binoculars to me that I’m also very impressed with for the money. He’s got great deals on optics. I’m a happy customer and he will get my business in the future.

I'm thinking about using a red dot instead of a scope. Have a Winchester 357 large loop. Need the picatinney rail, looking.

I thought about a red dot, and functionally, it would have been fine, but I wanted to keep it atleast semi traditional. XS sight systems makes rails for the Winchester’s. They seem top notch.

Haven’t gotten to the range yet. Just got it put together today. And it’s too cold to shoot at paper. I’m planning a range trip Wednesday and I intend on a 50 yard zero. Unless somebody has a better thought. I figure most shots with it will be between 10 and 100 yards so I figured I’d zero it right in between. In my mind, that should keep my in the vitals within that entire range. I also thought about a 25 yard zero then figure out the drop out to 100.

Nice! I always thought about having one reamed to 357 maximum but never did it. I think it is available in 327 Federal magnum now also!

According to the chart in the following article a 25 yard zero will put you -.2 at 100...

I'm wanting a Mil/Mil scope for my 10/22. I may have to give one of those a try.

Sure wish you were closer. It would be some funny stuff to run that rig down to 300 or 400 yards, maybe farther.

I'm not running out to get one but I think it is cool. One day I will have one or a 44 mag.

Excellent link. Thank you! I’ll give a 25 yard zero a try, then move to the 100 yard range.

How’s the cheek weld with the scope? Henry’s seem to have too much drop at the comb for me, even with irons.

It’s perfect. I can shoulder the rifle very quickly, and my natural head position lines up perfectly.

I don't know if I could get used to that scope on it, but that rifle is really cool. I'm a big fan of Henry rifles.

No idea how it tracks or anything of that nature, but built quality seems great. I still want to come see you for a fundamentals of rifle shooting type of class. If I get to do that this spring, I’ll bring this with me.

That's what pooped into my head as soon as I looked at the pic...a holographic red dot. That would be about as fast as it gets, I think.

Nice rifle. I very much want rifles in .357 and .44 magnum. I wish a quality manufacturer would build a 10/22 type autoloader in those calibers.

Range report. Put 20 rounds through it at 25 and 50 yards. I moved around the target and wasn’t shooting for groups, but it took 3 shots to sight in, and every shot after that was within the 1” bullseyes. I love it. Recoil is nada, and the scope is great so far.

Looking and sounding good! Please keep us advised as you work with the new rifle.

I've lusted after a lever gun in 45 Colt for a long time, I just can't scratch up the scratch to make it happen!

Maybe slightly off topic but the .357 is a hammer with 180 grain bullets out of a rifle. It’s one of the most wasted cartridges I can think of in a pistol.

Love the rifle and the caliber but I'd ditch the scope and go with peep sights. I've got two lever guns, the 35 Remington has the peep sights and the 45 Long Colt has Buckhorns and I'm thinking about a peep setup for it.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
