Are starting to be eaten a little bit in Young county. Maybe this cold weather is promoting that. Funny they crack them in half eating the yellow insides and leaving the cracked shells like me with sunflower seeds, lol.

I have had zero activity at my feeders until this week. I guess natural food is getting scarce.

Could be the cold. Could also be that they’ve sat around just long enough to have leached enough tannin from them to be more palatable.

Interesting Sneaky, I did not notice any of the Burr Oak acorns being opened up just a few taken out of burr casings.

Your findings are right in line with what I’ve read about deer’s preference in acorns. Burr oaks are white oaks, and they prefer them because they taste better due to less tannin to begin with. The red oak acorns have more tannin, which gives them a bitter taste. They’ll eat them, but typically after they’ve sat long enough to lose most of that tannin. Or maybe they just deal with it after the white oak acorns are gone. I forget, exactly, but it’s something along those lines.
