since I have no clue as to what would be the best bang for the buck, what would be the difference on thermal scope

The refresh rate is measure in hz. This is simply the number of times the image is refreshed on the display screen per second. 30hz means the image is flashed on the display 30 times per second. 60hz....well you get the idea.
If you were in a helicopter with a 30hz you could be moving so fast that the image would actually be lagging and could become choppy. Unless you plan to hunt from a helicopter or a very fast moving vehicle/UTV, there is no real benefit to 60hz.
I can hand you a 30hz and a 60hz and you'd be hard pressed to tell me which was which without being in something that was moving very fast. Also, it's worth noting that usually a 60hz is going to drain the battery quicker than a 30hz. A good all around choice is a Pulsar thermal because every unit is 50hz and they have the battery life issue figured out, so there is no negative effect of the faster refresh rate.
So in summary.....the vast majority of hunters would see absolutely no benefits from a 60hz vs a 30hz. Personally, I wouldn't pay $1 more for it but that's because I don't need it with my hunting situations.
Hope that helps.

If you use a 30, and then pick up a 60, you’d pick the 60. In my opinion, you can definitely tell the difference. 60 tracks fluid, 30 doesn’t . 30 is great, until you use a 60. Yes it absolutely uses more battery power. But I think it’s worth it . This is strictly my opinion, and it’s worth exactly what you paid for it. If you’d like to see the difference for yourself, look me up , your welcome to come use what I got .

I've just go to say I've never noticed this while in a stationary position. I've been using the new FLIR Thermosight PTS233 (30hz) next to a Pulsar Core RXQ30V, Pulsar Trail XP50 and a Pulsar Helion XP28 (all 50hz) this week and I've been using all 3 optics interchangeably a the same time and I never noticed a single bit of difference in the refresh rate. I guess I might just not be as discerning but it has never even crossed my mind, between a 30 and a 50/60 unless I was moving. Now something cheap with less than 30hz...oh ya those 10-20hz refresh rates are bad and very noticeable. Again, not arguing, I guess we are all just more sensitive to certain things. - Jason

Wasn’t taken as argument no worries here. Everyone has their opinion and that’s good to , make for healthy discussions , and as long as you don’t put a deer stand on my fence line we’re good.....
When I said fluid, imagine watching an old projector movie. If you could slow the speed down just enough so your eyes could detect the difference in frames. Very minor, but appears just a touch choppy. Again very minor . You’d probably never notice, unless you picked up a 60 right behind it, or your used to using a 60. Even scanning from truck, the 60 has no noticeable issue. The 50vs 60, I don’t know that I can tell or not, sometimes I think yes I see a difference, but I’m not sure I’m seeing it only because I KNOW it 50hz. If I wasn’t aware, I may not notice at all. And just to be clear, there’s no problem with any of the 30hz stuff I’ve ever used, worked great, killed a bunch of pigs. Just prefer higher refresh, so to me it’s worth the extra money. But I’d be lying if I said I’d killed any additional pigs because of it. I’ve got a sig that my boys use. It like a 10hz I think . Very noticeable on moving targets. But I’m willing to bet it’s got more kills than most avg owners have . Hope some of this helps .

Well, the FLIR PTS233 and Pulsar Core don't have very well refined images. Even my FLIR PS32 at 9hz didn't look too bad at all with its fuzzy image. A lot of the difference is lost in the blur. I will say this, the difference between scopes of different hz levels is often more about the scopes than the hz level. I can run my IR Hunter at 30 or 60hz and while I can tell a difference, it is miniscule. You get less image smear with 60 hz than you do with 30 hz for objects that are in motion.

I have an IR Hunter and had it set on 60 Hz for a long time and switched over to 30 Hz because of battery life issues. I can't say that I have noticed a difference even shooting running hogs...maybe very slightly. Killed 6 hogs 2 nights ago on 30 Hz and 4 of them were running, no issues.
