So I go To my lease around noon today to set up in a spot that I thought for sure would produce at least a sighting of a coyote. The wind was in my face and I had about 150 yards of grassland in front of me that backed up to endless forest. It seemed like a perfect set up. I was using the bottom of the line Fox pro decoy/ caller that has only three different sounds. My question is that I put it out about 50 yards in front of me and I could barely hear it. I had it on the wounded rabbit and sat for about 45 minutes and saw nothing. I know coyotes have good hearing but is it possible that that Call is not loud enough to reach out that far?

Chances are they came in behind you in the woods and smelled you. I try to hunt a crosswind so if they come in downwind of the call they won’t smell me. There is also a chance there just weren’t any around or interested.

I had nothing but grassland behind me. Acres of forest in front of me. They might not have been interested but man it looks like a perfect setup.

I don't have much luck calling them out into "wide open" areas in the daylight. It has been my experience that the coyote prefers some cover to approach through. And, like Sapper said - Crosswinds seem to be more successful for calling. I normally sit downwind of my call and try to position the coyote to appear in a spot between me and my call, for the killing shot. Hope this helps. Good Huntin' up

When calling predators, it is best to set up cross wind. Coyotes will come in from downwind and try to scent the prey before committing. If you are down wind then they will smell you and they may be interested and call out to your call, but they won't come in.

In the OPs situation, I would have set up the caller about 50-75 yards into the field, and then set up about 100 yards to either side of it along the tree line. Then watch the down wind side of the trees and shoot them as they come out into the field.

A decoy will help in daytime. All the caller manufacturers make one and they can be helpful to get the coyotes into the field for you.

On super windy days it helps to have power in your speakers. The animals will pick up some pretty quiet stuff, but if you barely heard it (and your hearing is normal) then it probably wasn't loud enough. Also, calling in sets of 10-15 minutes helps. Calling for 45 minutes straight is not productive usually. Most stuff will come in within 10 minutes and sometimes as quickly as a few minutes. Every set varies, but longer than 15 minutes and I am thinking its time to wrap it up.

staying a little longer might be worth the wait, if there is any water or brush piles fairly close, might get a cat.

hold on Newt, we got a runaway
