I understand there are different contours on the factory Remington 700 barrels, but is there a good source online somewhere that will tell me diameters of the different contours? I did a quick search, but it was very generic on answers but maybe my keywords were off...I don't know. My ultimate goal is to pick up a cheap Remington 700 in a short action, chop the factory barrel down and add a 5/8" thread for my can. I'll change out the stock but hoping to just run the factory barrel for a while until the rug-rat get's big enough to shoot (and the boss lady gets over the purchase of the rifle ) , then I'll probably swap it out. I will not run a thread adapter, so what factory contours are large enough for a 5/8" thread if there is one?

How long do you want your barrel?
I've just been looking at this same question. From my finding you might be able to get there with a Bartlein 3 18-20". If you want it for sure you have to go to a 3 b. 3 starts getting chunky and 3 b is getting chunkier. They might be over weight for your standard look and nose heavy.

Pretty short. For the short term, I'm wanting the barrel around 16.5". I plan for it to be my truck/utv gun here in Texas for the next 2-3 years, then when the boy (he's not quite 2 now) gets older go ahead and put a better barrel on it. Long term, it'll be his first rifle that he'll use for many years so it'll eventually get upgraded.

If you go that short it should open up more options. If this is short term waiting for the boy to get older I would just buy a Remington sendero or varmint contour and chop it thread it. Lots of folks on here have done that

That's what I was looking for. Thank you. I've looked at a few used rifles online and is what had me curious about it. I didn't want to be that guy to say, hey, can you measure out 16.5" and tell me what diameter your barrel is

Well it really depends on what I find. For now under $1k, with or without scope. Preferably cheaper is better, depending what it is. I've found a couple different 700s I'm fairly interested in, but I like FTF and although their prices are good, the length and area of the drive defeats the purpose of a good deal..I do travel quite a bit, but unfortunately not to those areas. For the right deal anything can be achieved.
I currently have a 22-250 the boy could use when he's older, but I cant seem to molest such a beautiful rifle. Mainly looking at 243, 6.5, 7-08, but open to a few others.

Remington's contour won't be much different.

Dick's and Cabelas put the ADL Varmint on sale this time of year. I picked one up last year in 308 for about $320 OTD and cut it down to 16.25".
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Good to know Fireman. Thank you. I'll keep that in mind. And nothing against tikka or others, I'm just used to the 700s and is currently what all of my bolt guns are.

That $320 does sound appetizing and within reasonable driving distance. I wasn't aware they got down that low being new but never really looked at new cheaper models. I know I'm coming off as a cheeparse, but for this ones intended purpose, it just makes sense. Then when I want to, I can build it up to whatever I desire.

Plenty of people like to stick with what they're familiar with. I agree, if lots of mods are going to happen, and ADL is the one to get. The barreled action won't be any different than the rest of them, as far as functionality.

Had two of them right out of the box that were shooters with the 26" barrel or bobbed to 16" with cheap facorty stock or in a McM, manners or chassis.

That's pretty much what I did with my semi-custom build. I just bought the cheapest one I could find and used just the action and that was it.
This one I plan to just chop the factory barrel down, thread it, throw a better stock on it (if its the cheap factory plastic one), probably a trigger (again depending what's in it) and be done.

Thanks everyone with the help.

20" bull is all one needs. Fluted is nice too. It's lighter.
Recently got a gym membership, strange folks! I like to show up the roid zombies with my full motion curls with the 55lb. bells. Not their cheater short stroked light weights. It's holarious.

If I were rigging up a 700 with the intent to replace the stock and cut down the barrel, then later pass it on to your son as soon as he gets big enough, I would seriously consider the 700 youth. It comes with a 20" standard countour barrel and a youth stock with a 12.5" length of pull. Replace the stock with what you want for the truck gun. When he gets old enough, put the youth stock back on it. The smaller dimensions will help him a lot as he learns to shoot. Both with mechanics and handling recoil. He will quickly grow into the full size stock at which time you can swap back. Enjoy the time afield with your kids. Those times with my son are son are my best hunting memories.

Well a trip to Killeen happened and a 6.5cm came home with me for less than $400. Everything was picked over pretty well by the time I made it and my options for a barrel big enough to thread were pretty slim.
I think the model is a Remington 700 adl tactical 6.5cm 24” threaded barrel...or something like that. I’ll still have the barrel cut, threaded, then throw a trigger and better stock. Undecided on optics still, but looking into that now. Thanks for the heads up on the deal alert at Dicks sporting goods, BIL.

If I measured right it was 1:8.5 twist.
