Thinking about redoing the slide on one of my carry pistols. So much holster wear it is nearly down to bare metal in places. Has anyone used one of the DIY ceramic/polymer/whatever coatings? I have looked at Alumahyde and Gun Coat from Brownells, Duracoat, Wheeler Engineering Cerama-Coat and others. Any experience with these or others? I don't expect it to last forever and don't want to spend the time and money to send it off to be done. I like to do things myself and I could always cold blue it but have decided to go with FDE if I can find the right stuff.

I have used Brownells Alumahyde II with good results on a shotgun.

I've sprayed a lot of duracoat. It is a good coating. Sharp edges and the muzzle ar prone to chipping though.

I've used Duracoat on several firearms. It holds up pretty well, but like any other paint, preparation is the key.
