Hey folks any load recommendations for 45 colt bullet powder combo that want break the bank. Plan on using as backup to rifle and lease carry gun. It has 4.5/8 barrel. Would like bullet powder combo to kill big hogs at close range. It's a blackhawk single action

Bullet choice is probably where you'll have the most flexibilty with cost. Commercial cast would be the cheapest way to go, and cast bullets are very good where penetration is important. Just be sure to use a fairly stiff charge of the powder you choose...you want the pressure to come up fast and whump that bullet base hard for good obturation to seal the bore and keep leading down. In other words, don't use a light charge of 2400 if you want 900 fps. In that case I'd use W231 or something faster burning. If you want 1300 fps, go to a slower burning powder.

You can push a Blackhawk in .45 Colt pretty hard, so you'll be able to make it pretty mean if you want.

Have shot a bunch of stuff in traps with some lazercast 250 grain cast round nose flat point and never had a complaint. I load over 9 grains of HS-6, is a cowboy load I believe at 800-900 fps.

I have another load using around 20 grains of IMR 4227 and a sierra 240 grain JHC Jacketed hollow cavity. They will do double caliber expansion. Shooting the cast stuff I have never really noticed expansion, just the bullet is already big around.

Have a supply of H 110 think that would work with a good 250 grain bullet. Hope to drive it to around 1000 fps. This will be my first hand loading of handgun round, have loaded lots of rifles

Probably not a good choice for a 1000 fps load in the .45 Colt. That powder need to be driven hard. Unique or W231 would be a better pick, and there are many others that would work.

For the past 35 to 40 years I have been using 8.0 to 8.5 grains of Unique. Drives a 250 / 255 gr. cast bullet about 850 to 875 f.p.s.
Has taken many hogs and a few deer.

Agree and would throw in Hodgdon Universal Clays in the mix. Switched to it years ago, very clean burning powder was the difference I saw that lead to the switch.

https://www.johnlinebaughcustomsixguns.com/writings this is a fantastic article about the 45 Colt.

Besides Win 231, HS 6, and H110 I have had good success with Unique and Blue Dot.

Use either reloading manuals or the powder manufacturer's website to help determine how much of what type of powder to use for a particular weight and bullet style. I never give out a recipe in fear of having a typographical error.

In two of my 45 Colt pistols I have only shot cast bullets. In my other 45 Colt I shoot both cast and jacketed bullets. I have found that Leadhead Bullet Company and Penn Bullets carry well made cast bullets.

Luck favors the prepared mind.

OP stated he wants to drive a 250 about 1000 fps. H110 may work really well for a 1300 fps load, but it's the wrong powder for a 1000 fps load.

Don't rule out IMR 800X, might need to weigh every charge though.

Look at this QuickLOAD powder profile solution. This was set up to show powders and charges yielding 1000 fps. Notice the "Prop.Burnt %" column. Any powder that gives you less than a 90% burn is probably not going to work real well. Notice H110 and W296 right up there at the top. NOT a good pick.

The last 25 or so powders are the ones I'd be looking at, and I'd probably want to go with something that fills the case 50% or more. I would definitely not try to get 1000 fps using Trailboss, but the rest of the bottom of that list look like good candidates, from HS6 on down.

My load is 10 grains of Unique (use at your own risk) With my home cast 260gr HARD lead RNFP
In my Ruger Blackhawk, and my Rossi Carbine.
Might not be the best choice, but I have ALOT of it!
