Well the first ammo I tried in my new 17 HMR was the Winchester offering with the 17 gr. Varmint HV. I got 1 out of 5 misfires, all went off on the second try. The rifle is a Savage 9317 and accuracy was satisfactory but the misfires were not. Not knowing why the rifle was misfiring I took the bolt apart and smoothed everything up that moved, degreased all parts and reassembled. Still the Winchester stuff stayed at the original rate of 1 in five misfires. Next up was the A17 from CCI. 3 shots into 3/4 inch and out of one box of ammo 1 misfire. Last and best is the Hornady XTP 20 gr. round. What a tackdriver! No misfires and 3 shots into 1/2 inch group after group. This round hit just a bit higher than the 17 gr. bullets, less than an inch. Hard to believe an inexpensive rifle like this Savage can shoot this well. Very light rifle also. Magazine is a bit funky but it functions perfectly, trigger is plenty good enough.

I have a Savage 9317 and when I first started shooting it I noticed several misfires. I ultimately found that at the rear of the bolt, the external hammer end was rubbing on the stock enough to slow it down and cause misfires. You might want to check your clearance too.

I think this rifle needs a firing pin spring.
