Dad and I hunted in Ozona this past weekend, and it doesn't get much better than being out in the sticks with your pops for a few days. We had a good time checking cams and just hanging out. First off, we don't get out that way very often, maybe a few times a year at most. Regardless, we had a great time.

We saw a ton of deer and had one OLD deer on cam that I thought looked familiar. Sunday morning out walks Pawpaw hobbling around and I knew it was a deer that I had seen 3 years ago (2014) that I passed up. Three years ago I had him at 5.5 years old, and the only reason I didn't take him was that hunting pressure was pretty low and really wanted to see what he would do the following year. 2015 & 2016 roll around and he disappeared. This year he showed up on cam and I confirmed Sunday morning in person he was the big guy I passed up. I just couldn't bring myself to put a bullet in him. He's now 8.5 years old and shooting him just wouldn't be the same as it was back in 2014 (or 2015 like I had hoped). I figured Pawpaw has lived this long and evaded us the past 2 years, and I let him walk. It was pretty peaceful watching him for the 20-30 minutes on Sunday.

On with the pics...

Here he was when I had him as a 5.5 yo due to other bucks that were around him that day.

Old man Pawpaw this past Sunday.

If I would have only known back in 2014 he was going to disappear on us for 2 years, I'd be telling a different story...but that's part of why I decided to let the old man live out his days peacefully. He's declined a ton and although he wasn't just skin and bones, if I would have shot him this past weekend, it wouldn't be because of the meat. He seemed pretty healthy for his age I thought but is definitely out of his prime.

He did perk up a bit when one of the does that was starting to come in, popped a squat. Glad to see he still had a little natural sparkle in his eyes. roflmao

Good for you, I'm not sure I could have let him walk the first time you did. Pretty cool to see him as an "old man" now.

If I was worn down like that I'd like to be taken fast and humane versus laying it down and not getting up. I want out in a blaze of glory! up
