my brotier shot a 9 point this weekend at 80 yards the buck dropped in its tracks thank goodness. looking at deer could not see any blood on ground except 1 drop. the penetration where bullet entered behind front shoulder busted up ribs and ripped up lungs but never exited deer. he shoots a Remington 270. next day I shoot a 10 point at 208 yards could hear the hit. went looked for deer for 1 hour no blood nowhere could see where ground was messed up where he stood followed where he ran until he could no longer be seen no blood anywhere. we all but gave up saying maby bullet hit rock on ground. started walking back to jeep and buck was laying in ditch 10 feet from drivers door. 200 yards from where i shot him. on ground was blood coming out his mouth. no blood on any part of his body. glowed out heart. no exit again no blood nowhere. I shoot a weatherby 270. both of us shoot hornedy 145grain precision hunter
what's up with this shell. I want a bullet that is reliable and go through deer and leave a blood trail has anyone had this happen and what shells should I try

Did you find the bullets since there wasn't an exit?

Get some ammo with partitions or accubonds and you will have an exit for blood trails

My family has always had really good results shooting Sierra GameKing bullets. My father in law has hand loaded them for years. we have used them in 6mm, 7mm mag, 7mm-08, .30-06, .270, .223, and .308. I am just now beginning to get into reloading myself. I will be running these same bullets because I have first hand seen the effects. They are reasonably priced, very accurate, bullet always passes through and almost everything we have shot with them has dropped within 10 yards. That doesn't mean that there isn't something better, but this is what we use and love.
I believe there are a couple of manufacturers that produce a whole round using the Sierra Game Kings. I'm not sure how these perform because I've never shot them, but I would assume they would do pretty well.

I favor Barnes bullets. Some flavor of all copper.

Just my opinion
I personally don’t like BT bullets. Seems every deer or pig I have shot with them has a small entry hole and no exit. I lung/heart shoot deer. Best shot for that animal in my opinion. My last buck weight 190 and he only ran about 15 yards. Shot him with a core loc 180g 30-06. Had a 2” exit wound and blew out both lungs. The last deer I shot with a BT, was a bad experience. Same shot location but ended up shooting him 3 times. Shot 1 was a low lung shot. Thru and thru. Dropped straight down and I waited 45mins before I went after him. He jumped up and ran. Shot him the back rump. Dropped again. Waited another 30 mins and walked up to him again. Got up and tried to run. Shot him in the back of the neck for the final kill shot. The rump shot had no small amount on entry and exploded the rump. The neck shot had no blood on entry and exit would was 1” exit.
I have very consistent results with the core loc ammo. Mainly tested on pigs. Same shot placement on pigs will have a pinky finger size hole but no exit but a lot of blood. However, in the few cases they do run, I have been able to pickup a blood trail within 25 yards and have found every kill. BTs on pigs will not leave any blood trails and have lost several animals shooting different calibers. Bonus also is that they are only about $1 per shot.

Wow that's odd the Precision Hunter ammo from Hornady is loaded with the ELD-X bullet. I've shot several deer, pigs and coyotes from 50-350 yards and everyone a pass through with a big exit. I hand load for a 6.5x47 using the 143 grain ELD-X . You might try the 150 grain Hornady soft point . I've had really good luck with Sierra Gamekings as well.

If that’s the bullet used in that cartridge, I am likewise surprised. Not every shot is the same and funny things happen, but time in and time out that bullet out of a .270 should penetrate well and exit on most shots on deer - much moreso than some of the others mentioned as alternatives.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

I have used remington core loct for 30+ years and have had very good success. Actually never shot anything else for deer or hogs.

I shot two does over Thanksgiving weekend, 100 yards plus. Using 270 with 150 soft points by Remington Core Locks. One front shoulder DRT, the other front chest DRT. The front shoulder shot when skin was total distroyed had to throw it away. I use them in 3006 and 308 no problem.

If I don't have any Game Kings loaded up, I shoot core-lokt ammo as well. Had good results with it as well, and you can't beat the price.

It is different for everybody I prefer to load 120 grain HP in my 7 mag and 90 grain in 25-06 seldom do they exit and so many clean kills on deer. I consider hogs different heavier partition would be my choice.

If you did indeed blow the heart to pieces, there may have been no trail because the blood pump the was shut off. Even with a complete pass through you may get nothing but blood dribbling out but not the pumping spray that you are looking for. A good lung shot that takes out some arteries (maybe only injures the heart) will leave you a beautiful blood trail, especially with a complete pass through, you will have blood squirting everywhere. We have tracked heart shot deer 200-300 yards, it is amazing how far they can go with their heart blew to shreds, and not find a drop of blood. I have seen some heart shot that didn't really rip up the heart too bad and it kept pumping so the blood trail was better. Even had some beautiful pass through broadheads cut through the heart and it stopped, and the deer still made it a long ways with no or minuscule blood trail. Sounds like you made a good shot.

Sierra, Barnes are good too, but my gun doesn't shoot them as good as the gameking... I have shot the Nozler ballistic tip too and they are good on Whitetail.

The EDL-X is a great round on bigger bodies animals. I’ve killed or seen killed elk, oryx, pronghorn (350yd shot), mule deer and whitetail. It performed flawlessly on all of those animals except “Hill Country” size whitetail. If you hit them in the shoulder, it performs well. If you shoot for lung/heart, it will kill but you’ll see results similar to what you saw. My son 12 ringed a doe last year at 60yds that ran a ways but died within site. She didn’t leave a drop of blood anywhere.
Again, I love the bullet on bigger animals and have used them since they hit the market. I just think there are better bullets for the majority of the whitetail we see in Texas.

Plumber, there are lots of good bullets available. I'm a hand loader and have tried a bunch of them. The nosler Partition in my experience is top of the heap. Their terminal performance is what other Bullets try to measure up to. If I can get them to shoot well they are my first pick. Right behind that is the nosler accubond. On deer I usually shoot a 7RM or a 270 win. I too really like the Sierra gamekings. Not as tough as the two I mentioned earlier and up close, meat damage can be dramatic, but it is a good cup and core bullet. I also like the Hornady interlock on game. It will behave very similar to the Remington corelokt. Any of these would be good choices for the 270 win, and I would use which ever one shoots the best. Your 270 weatherby is fast and that extra speed should be taken into consideration . Either of the two premium Bullets by nosler would be good choices. If i wanted to load a regular cup and core bullet in the weatherby I would go heavy for caliber. (150 grain) Inside of 150 yards I think they will perform more to your liking than the 130's on game. Another bullet that should work well in your weatherby is a monometal like the ttsx. They like speed so there is no need to go heavy. The faster you push them the better the terminal performance and they penetrate well. Good luck with finding the ammunition performance you are looking for.

I gather the OP doesn't reload since he asked about "shells". I notice Midway has 6 types of .270 WTBY ammunition available. The one I'd choose for most likely full penetration would be the 130 grain Barnes TTSX bullet in Weatherby brand ammunition. Weatherby .270 WTBY Barnes 130 grain TTXS ammo But frankly I'm surprised that either the .270 WCF or the .270 WTBY with a 145 grain bullet wouldn't go completely through a whitetail. I've never had a bullet NOT go completely through.

Hornady Super Performance SST 130 or 140 Grain .270.
Never once had an issue.
My 2 cents

Yeah but he shoots the .270 WTBY. Does Hornady make ammo for the WTBY? I don't believe they do.

Back when PMC was still alive and well and making rifle ammo, I stocked up with Gamekings for 243 and 270. Down to one last box. Very accurate but that jacket tends to seperate quickly

My son shot his first buck thanksgiving week using hornady 165 gmx 308. I picked these up when trying new rounds for my 308. His rifle shot them well. I was not impressed, 120 yards, shoulder hit, deer went down, got up a few minutes later and ran off. Recovered the deer, minimal blood trail. I have shot majority of my deer, 308, 30-06 with sierra game kings. Will be switching him to a game king.

Yeah but he shoots the .270 WTBY. Does Hornady make ammo for the WTBY? I don't believe they do. I think he shoots a Weatherby rifle in 270 Win. He said his friend used a Remington 270. Just my interpretation. I'm a little surprised at no exit as well.
