Took a trip to Magdalena, NM and a Unit 17 cow elk hunt last week. This was my first cow elk hunt in 10 years, since New Mexico no longer offers non-resident hunts unless with an outfitter or private land tags. I garnered the private land tag, got several tips from other hunters for about 8 spots to hunt in the San Mateos Range. But, not to my surprise, several numb-nut hunters camped in those areas!
So I tried the Magdalena Range, spotted a herd first morning, but as Murphy's Law would have it, the herd was on private land, less than a 1/4 mile from the gate to the national forest! My last cow elk hunt 10 years ago was in this same area, and had exactly the same result! Cows on the wrong side of the fence!
Tried checking some more hot spots, campers at two of them, and no results at the others. So, pretty much the same scenario the next two days, but on the third day, I did get the blood pumping, when I came across this huge herd of antelope on the way back to town!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOh0f4H0qLw
