I looked at a place south of Spur this weekend and it looks like good country. Thick mesquites and some draws running through it. What can I expect as far as the deer population? Are their quite a few deer or not as many deer but a chance at a bruiser?I asked about mule deer but was told that there had never been any seen on this place. Thanks for any replies!

Low population but there are some big deer in that country.

I wouldn't call it low population. Maybe compared to the hill country, but there is no comparison in the size.
Just went 2 miles east of Dickens, to pick up my buddies wife's car, she hit a nice 10 point Sat night.

My in laws have a ranch between Spur and Girard and we didn't have a lot of deer but the ones that were there were big, I killed a 196 7/8 there in '05.

We are northwest of dickens. We have a lot of numbers, no real big deer seen yet but I know they are around. Lot of pigs too

I hunt south of spur off of 70 near Gilpin. The typography of the terrain can vary a great deal depending which side of 70 you are on. The east side is undilulating cedar breaks and mesquite flats that offers mule deer and whitetail. West of the highway is whitetail country. Rolling to flat mesquite broken up by cotton and wheat fields.

Not a high density deer area but a good population with great antler and body growth potential.
