Took my German Short Hair pup on his first hunt this weekend and he did great released birds 20 quail 5 pheasants. He held his point and did a good job retrieving which I havent worked on with him. He is still sore/tied after 2 days, does anyone do anything to help there dogs recovery after big hunt.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

We have two GSP girls 4 and 9 months old. The 9 month old has been on dove, quail and duck hunts with us. The quail hunt appeared to wear her down the most as she was constantly running during the hunt. She will run herself til she literally drops. To help her recover we massage her muscles. She enjoys it and helps her to recover. Where did you do the quail hunt at? We went to Chaparral but that is a 4 hour drive for us. Considering a visit to Poetry to give her more train oppty. Took my German Short Hair pup on his first hunt this weekend and he did great released birds 20 quail 5 pheasants. He held his point and did a good job retrieving which I havent worked on with him. Op, like forest said, hunt it more. Runninig your dog regularly before season will help it a lot.

Hate to be blunt but your dog is really out of shape. Running in a 40 acre field isn't much. Get a Walky dog for your mountain biike and get him running up to 4 miles a day 3 times a week. Get away from traffic and on hiking trails. If your pup is younger than 1 year old disregard this
