Without a doubt an 870. I have mine 49 years and 3 months.

Have you shot or handled a new one???

Yes, the old 870s like the one my dad shoots are really nice guns.

I can not recommend them to anyone looking to buy a new pump shotgun. IMO they are junk.

I bought this 870 Wing Master in 1963, when I was 12 years old, $144 at Coast to Coast, $12 a month for 12 months.

I actually like it better than my new Beretta Extrema,......................

1984 870 Wingmaster....love it. It never fails and if I need it to, I'll break ice with it and not even blink.

Great old shotgun, like a Winchester 97, but what ammo in steel would you shoot through it?

For me it's the 870...hands down... a wingmaster at that. I think the mossbergs have too much "slop". Even once they are locked up, the forearm wobbles back and forth all over the place. Also don't care for the safety up top.

I've seen guys that loved the Brownings, but I'm not a fan of the bottom ejecting

I grew up with a 12 ga wingmaster and thought so much of it, I named my first dog Remington

Or a Winchester 1887 - 10 gauge or 12 gauge - and you get style points!

Yes, it's a lever action. wink

Mossberg 835. It's the best patterning shotgun there is and you can roll it in the mud then shoot it. I recently did some pretty scientific patterning of a Mossberg 835 stock mod, 870 fancy extended mod, weatherby stock mod and beneli stock mod. I shot them all at 20 and at 40 yrds. The beneli absolutely sucked. Didn't pattern for crap, it's not even in the runnings. The weatherby was decent. It was nice at 20 but had holes at 40. The fancy choked 870 had a nearly identical pattern at 40 as the 835 every time. Both put130-140 in the circle over 2 shots and we're well ddistributed. The difference is at 20 the 870 had no spread and was way too tight. The old 835 had a nice spread at 20 but still had just as many in the circle at 40. Having hunted with all of the above mentioned guns the Mossberg not only patterns best but it also can go a long time between cleanings and do it's job. The others will do the job but they seem to need to be cleaned more often.
