Mosin m44 is the rifle, all original no mods They are great rifles. I have a M44 made in 1943 at the Tula factory that was used by a tank crew and basically never shot. It's in mint condition and I have to take it out hunting sometime. I have 880 rounds of the 7.62x54R silver tip ammo and 100 rounds of the Sellier & Bellot 180gr soft point ammo that I picked up for hunting with it but haven't gotten out with it yet. What round did you use on the deer? Man you must have singed his hair at that distance lol! I still have to finish making an adjustable front sight post with the extra globe front sight that I picked up. I have to get it done now after seeing your post. Congrats again and thanks for inspiring me to finish my backup sight for hunting.

I was using some spam can fmj from monarch, was doing the job accuracy wise for me when I went out for a test shoot, shooting soda cans at 100yds consistently

Well its 0140 here and I just finished putting the last bag of meat away, cleaned up the counters, and had a few pieces of back strap cooking while doing so. Very tasty and tender, processing the quarters was a bit challenging at first, but it got easier by the third one, it was a learning process. I hope I get to do it again. Now I need to get meat grinder, I have several pounds of tougher stuff I want to grind and some in want to make jerky with

Good one to start with, it is bigger than my first one. That was way back in 1973 and in East Texas. Sure will eat good, congratulations.

Great job! Enjoy they bounty. Pretty neat you taking it with an open sight rifle. I have shot many an animal with open sighted rifles, but haven't shot any deer with open sights.

Most of the feeders are 100 yards or less from the blind, i never thought it was very sporting to run a scope when I had a few iron sight options available, I have also hunted there with a bolt action 20ga with slugs, Winchester 94, and a savage 840 bolt 3030. All with irons, if I ever found myself hunting at longer ranges I would certainly be using one of my scoped rifles though. After 100yards the front sight post starts covering a lot of the target lol

100 yards, hitting a soda can comsistently, with open sights of a Mosin is some great shooting. Those front sight posts are wider than some big old trees even at 50 yards and you did it at 100 over and over again. Fantastic!!!! I picked up a couple of extra globe front sight assemblies so I don’t screw up the original part. I took the pin out of one of them so I could thread the hole. Then I am going to file down a couple of the KNS Precision AK47/SKS adjustable front sight posts so I can find a happy medium in height range so I can get really accurate with it. They sell those front sight post kits that have different size front sight posts and ball tip front sight posts. Then I am going to add some Glow-On super phosphorescent paint to the front sight post and make two dots on the rear sight so they will glow in low light conditions. The stuff comes right off but I also bought an extra rear sight leaf just to be safe lol. Congrats again and I am seriously impressed on your shooting skills with Mosin iron sights at 100 yards. Have a great season!!!!

Have a great season!!!! For me at 100yds the sight completely covers the can, I'm hitting the can (tall boy, 16oz) 3-4 out of five times. I tweaked the windage on the front sight at 25 yards till I had it holding quarter size groups on the bulls eye, then went out to 100 with paper, worst groups have been a max of 4 inch spread, lost of them are 3 inch or less. Either way its still inside the critical zone as long as I don't pull the shot, which I've done a time or two. Once in a while i don't even touch the 7×11 target lol.

I was 20 on my first real deer hunt alone. Went with an amigo to a place in Blanco a couple times when I was a bit younger but I never got a shot. We'd walk together and he's stop and look through his scope I'd say "do you see one?" then BOOM and the hunt was over lol. At 20, two amigos took me out on the Pedernales river area around Hwy 71. We all sat in the same oak tree and one of my buds killed a deer. They told me if you like it, get a rifle and hunt this 20 acres anytime you want. I went to McBride's and got S&W 30.06 and we went back the next weekend. We all sat in different trees, no stands, just sitting on a branch.
At sunrise I saw sumthin but it didn't look like a WT deer. It was dark like dark chocolate, had fork horns and I was confused. I finally decided it was a WT and shot it. It ran and stopped right under my tree! I shot it and it went down right there. I was hooked and have since spent a fortune and countless days afield. A few years later we had a lease near Hamilton Pool and I killed another dark WT, this one was black as the ace of spades and a six or eight pointer yet smaller rack.
Both of my sons began hunting much younger of course. Both took 12 pointers as their first bucks. I told both it would be a long time before they could top that. And to this day, at least two decades later, they haven't. They're interest is in the two legged does for now so I hunt alone. I'm not mad at the deer anymore and shifted toward murdering pigs at night. I still hunt deer but usually shoot em with a camera unless it's a huge toad of an animal.
Those who give up liberty for security deserve neither.

You went euro on him. That's cool. Always fun. I change it up just to spruce up the hunt and memories.
Recently got a gym membership, strange folks! I like to show up the roid zombies with my full motion curls with the 55lb. bells. Not their cheater short stroked light weights. It's holarious.
