This is the craziest rut i’ve ever seen. A doe came by me at 8 this morning, acting really really nervous, followed 5 minutes later by LoverBoy the 6 point. Then he starts running doe all over the place. I put the binocs on him, since he was about 250 yards from me by then, but then, in the middle of all those deer flying around, there stands a serious buck. Don’t know where he came from, but he was just standing watching LoverBoy chase the girls. Man...nice rack, looked like a 10 point, so I let fly with the 260. I thought I hit him good, but he ran into the woods. After a good wait, and some coffee, I walked to where I thought he had been. Standing there looking at the blood, and look up and there’s a doe and LoverBoy 20 yards from me, just standing there. As I stood still they walked into the woods, not caring even a tiny bit about me being there. The blood was bright and frothy, so I did put it in the lungs. I found him not far away.
For the bullet guys, the bullet used was a 120 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and range was 260 yards.
So then we (grandson and I) took the buck to the house and hung him up to skin him. While doing that, the grandson whispered “papa, look behind you, and move slow”. I slowly turned and there’s a good 7 point 15 steps from us. The buck just looked at us, decided we were of no interest, and slowly strolled away.
Never seen it so crazy before.

Have seen Bucks do some crazy things during rut. Years ago I walked by a nice Buck (not a shooter) I walked about 7-8 yards by him down a road. He had been chasing a Doe and decided to get a bite of corn. Man he stunk, was rutting hard. Made me a little nervous, have heard of rutting Bucks attacking people.

This mornings buck didn’t stink too bad, but the grandson found him partially by smelling him. Also, the buck still had a good layer of white fat, and the meat didn’t smell gamey. If we were later in the rut, I doubt there’d be much fat on him.

Thats a great day. Especially close to the house.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

It makes them crazy......
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

2 different times I've shot bucks that were tending a doe, and had to physically chase the doe away from the dead buck. Another time, I had 3 bucks harassing a doe, and shot the largest of the 3. He dropped in his tracks, and one of the other bucks walked over to him, put his nose on him, then started attacking him. Actually rolled the body over, and pushed it along the ground. I jumped out of the blind and hollered at him, "cut that nonsense out!". He stopped, gave me the stink eye for a full second or two, and then just casually trotted off.
Thank you...thank you very much
