I have an older model Remington 700 in 7mm express, or 280. Rifle has always been a shooter. Well I swapped to a new scope (Vortex Viper) for more magnification and better quality. Actually bore scrubbed my barrel last night, cleaned the entire rifle, the whole 9 yards. Bore sighted the new scope, used older Leopold 1 piece base, and rings.

Took it to the range with factory Hornandy 139grn SST's, shot 4 to get it zeroed, and then shot 4 that were all touching! group was at 1" high and 1/2" to the right of bulls eye. Moved out to 200 yards, and 6 shots, all went left 7"'s.....What the heck? I had switched to another box of factory ammo, same ammo just different lot #. So I tried a couple from the first box, and they were still at least 5" left.....

Wind was 5 mph or less and at my back almost directly. What is going on? First time I have ever had this happen. Thoughts from the brain trust, please.....

You check 100 yard zero again, after the 200 yard shots?

No I ran out of targets LOL. I am heading out now to get some more. Range was filling up fast with all the weekend warriors so I will probably wait and go back tomorrow morning at day break.

I was thinking the same thing though, zero at 200 and see what it does at 100 after that.

LOL I suspect that is what I will have to do. I am going on a muley hunt in Mexico in Jan, and I just wanted to take this old rifle, it has always served me well.

If you have the base with the windage screws, chunk it for solid bases/rings. If you don't want to chunk it, sounds like you may not have the base/ring with the windage screw centered. (Especially if your 100 yard zero is still where it is suppose to be). In other words, with the adjustable base, make sure the rings are concentric to the alignment of the bore. Otherwise, the further from the bore you get, the more off it will be.

Heck, if it won't shoot, let me have it and I'll put it next to my 7mm express. I'm will still out shoot me.

It sounds like something is loose to me. Off centered windage screws wouldn't cause a hook shot like that. Off centered windage screws would effect being on paper at first but once zeroed it should stay true.

Someone needs to retake Geometry. Two lines on a plane are forced to intersect at 100 yards due to the adjustments on the scope. Unless those two lines are perfectly parallel, that intersection will be the last point of intersection into perpetuity.

Shaking my head...

Geometry doesn't explain why it shot to the right at 100 then switched to the left at 200. I'd guess the base as said above, at last springs Hunters Challenge the same thing happened to one of the shooters, Chad diagnosed the problem and helped him fix it.

Geometry absolutely does. It didn't "switch right". It continues on a straight path. If you can't understand that concept, then don't volunteer an answer.

There is not a line on a scope because there is a single reticle in the scope. The scope body has nothing to do with it. Tilting the scope does nothing except for mess with adjustment. Explain why a 0 Moa vs 20 Moa scope base doesn't cause this same thing.

If I use a 0 moa base and I zero at 200, I'm 1-1.5 inches high at 100. If I use a 20 Moa base, after zeroed I get the same result. Scopes tilted differently but how do I get the same result?

Texasteach...maybe you should stop teaching texas the wrong things.

First off, I never said "switch right".. The rifle shot 1/2" to the right at 100, a straight path puts it 1" right at 200....but it shot left. P_102

I once had a Bushmaster AR that treated me badly. If I sighted in at 50, it would be off to the left at 100. If I sighted in at 100, it would be off to the right at 50. I sent it to BM and it came back good. I believe the problem was that the barrel was not in lateral alignment with the receiver.

My money is with TT on this. The scopes line of sight is not in same plane as the bore. Have to adjust rear windage screws until in same plane as bore or problem will remain.

Remounted the scope today, after shooting again this morning. Zero'd at 200, 3.5 inches to the left. I am seriously thinking something is not right in the scope. Don't have any other 30 MM scopes freed up now or I would try that.

Took scope and rings off, I scribed the centerline of the 1 piece mount, and did some measuring, I don't think it was mounted off center enough to cause it to move that far left at 200. Anyway took everything off, cleaned and checked mount and rings. Remounted and torqued all fastners. It is about as centered as you can get it with out using a jig. I will be changing the scope mounts after this season.

FWIW, the scope that came off, has been on this rifle for 8 years, and never had to move it ever! Just wanted more magnification for the upcoming hunt. Seriously thinking about putting the old scope back on and going with what I know works.

Don't know if I will get to shoot tomorrow or not, but I will post results when I do get to shoot again.

Check for scope parallax. That would be my best educated guess and can cause exactly what you describe.

Definitely use the scope that has proven reliable for now. Mess with the other after the season.

There are no good new ideas right before a match or a hunt.

When you have time to play with it, put the scope's windage right in the middle. You can do that by going all the way one way and then count how many clicks it takes to bottom out the other way, then go half way back. After you do that, align the point of aim to the point of impact by adjusting the screws on the Leopold base, not using the scope adjustments, and see if that corrects your problem.
