Interesting read. I'm not sure where I stand on this. She should not have shot anything that she wasn't sure what it was, but having met enough people out there that think everything is either a deer or a moose, I can see where a young girl who is hunting in an area that is not supposed to have elk in it could make this mistake. I also really admire her dad for calling the Game Wardens right away. To me, that's the most important part of the story.

What EW said +1...just do not understand why the young Huntress has to surrender the critter to the State Game Rangers to distribute as THEY PLEASE ....."IF" .....she does not want to ....and without any coersion from the State Officials...and OBTW ....IMO the Antlers are hers too....WHAT a Trophy !!!!
Possesion is 9 points of the law and unless the Elk is a prohibited animal in that State, or belongs to someone else and was shot illegally, which apparently none of these issures are being claimed...yadda yadda. JMHO & YMMV Ron

"Missouri has no hunting season for elk" - Sounds like they're reintroducing them to some parts of the state and it's not an "exotics" issue where you can just shoot them any time. I don't think she's in trouble, just didn't get to keep it.

JMHO & YMMV Ron Seems to me that they probably aren’t supposed to be shooting elk. If that’s the case, I think they did it right. No need to make things hard on her, but she can’t keep it. Then everyone would be shooting them and calling the game warden.

If she is not in trouble, she should be able to keep the meat. It's bogus to take it from her and give it to someone else.

Whether they take enforcement action against her or not, the elk was killed illegally. You can't expect to keep the meat from an illegally killed animal. It sounds to me like the action they took is more than reasonable. I would expect to lose my rifle, get some hefty fines, and lose the meat and antlers in that situation. Kudos to the dad for doing the right thing even though he knew they might get into trouble. It sounds like this young lady needs a little more time hunting with dad. If she's shooting at brown patches and doesn't know the difference between a deer and an elk, she probably isn't ready to hunt by herself.

She doesn't get the meat. She doesn't get the antlers. It was an illegal kill. That the state isn't giving her and/or her father a citation is by the grace of the state.

I don't know if it was Missouri GW or who called in the press, but that was the worse thing that could happen with all the haters out there.

There's no elk season it Texas, either. If an elk walks in I can't shoot it?

To be quite honest, this does not surprise me. We have lots of hunting accidents that occur. Hunters shooting hunters, people shooting dogs by mistaking them for coyotes or wolves, shooting horses on provincial grazing reserves, there was a recent caribou shot here and a big investigation going on. Now there were over 90 geese dumped into the ditch. Oh and few people shoot grizzly bears thinking that it was a black bear with brown fur.

From what I've read, their laws are completely different. If an animal is not specifically listed for that area, you can't kill it. It's the opposite principle here.

My take away is the girl obviously was not ready to be turned loose to hunt on her own. People shooting things without a positive I. D. is how tragic accidents happen, and things that you don't want shot get shot. For that reason in my opinion she should be ticketed. The father has my utmost respect, teaching his daughter to face her mistakes head up and put them behind her. He more than likely expected a ticket when he made the call. Sometimes teenagers do some pretty dumb stuff.

It is protected Missouri. They are actually trying to build up a viable hunting population for elk. You are confusing Texas law with Missouri law.

I've been seeing this blow up all over social media. Many people on all sides (Pro-Hunter, Anti-Hunter, and those that are neither) are criticizing her. I'm sick of it already.
All I'm going to say: It was an honest mistake. She and her dad admitted to it, and even called immediately to notify about it. They both owned up to it.
How often do you see something like that? That just shows there's still good honest people out there.
And in these times when everyone is running their mouths as if they're Holier than Thou, need to eat their pride and stop pretending they're perfect.
So I applaud the girl, not because she's a hunter, but because she knew she made a mistake and admitted to it. And she owned up to it, not under duress or under oath, but immediately and dutifully.
So good for her dad doing the right thing and teaching his daughter good morals and ethics.

Huh, I don't see anywhere that the girl called the came warden to report the illegal kill. The dad did by all accounts. She didn't send the game warden a picture. The dad did.
So, the girl didn't really admit her mistake so much as the dad identified it and called the game warden. She didn't have a lot of choice on whether or not her dad called to report the incident.
