My son just adopted a 3 - 4 Year old dog. He appears to be part Rot or Dobie, and German Sheppard. He is a very well trained and smart dog, he is and will be a house dog and will not hunt.
We go to the range fairly often for several hours, I do not want to leave the dog home by himself. I would like to take him to the range while we shoot. Any suggestion? We have a 4-H shooting and hunting club so we shoot everything from .22 pistol / rifle to 12 Gage shotguns and high power rifles. I do not want to hurt his ears or damage his hearing.
Thank You Robert

I'd be more worried about scaring the crap out of him than hurting his ears! If he hasn't been around gunfire before, DO NOT, repeat DO NOT take him to the range for his first encounter. It will only end badly.
Take him out somewhere and let him run around. Shoot a blank pistol when he is way out there then gradually as he gets closer until it doesn't bother him. Then keep doing it. There is no way you will be able to prepare him for the range other than exposure to that sound slowly. Regardless whether he will be a hunter or not, he needs to be conditioned to it! In my opinion, a gun range is no place for a dog. Especially since you mentioned high powered rifles. That's entirely different than rimfire, pistol and shotgun.

Hunt 'em if you got 'em! They may not be here next year!

Thanks guys,
This is a very smart and obedient dog, I just did not want to leave him alone at home more than necessary. I also do not want to do anything to cause him problems. The last dog he had was terrify of thunder and we do not want to create that again. He has only had the dog since Saturday afternoon so we do not know how he will be with thunder.
Thank You Robert

I've seen dogs that were afraid of thunder that were not gun shy.

I've seen dogs that were afraid of thunder that were not gun shy. I have 2.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Don't take him to the range--dogs need to be introduced to gunfire carefully you need to observe the dog when a gun is fired from a distance and slowly close the distance he is from gunfire.

I've seen dogs that were afraid of thunder that were not gun shy. Mine is scared of thunder and fireworks but if he's on birds, you could lay a shotgun across his forehead and pull the trigger and he wouldn't flinch a millimeter.

We will only be 3-4 Hrs. but he is already home all week during work / school.
We are in a small town with an under utilized range. A lot of the time we are the only ones there, most of the time it is just the 4-H youth. we are in a cliche pit with plenty of room to start shooting with him way back, to see how it would work.
I have never had dogs around gunfire and wanted input. I will probably start off leaving him and bob at the gate and shooting .22 and slowly move closer, see if it works. leave him home when it is busy / big bore stuff.
I was surprised to here concern about high power rifles, I did not know they were louder than a 12 Gage. Most of the youth are shooting .243, .270, .380.
Thank You Robert

You have a lot of good advice from men that have hunting dogs that are shot around a lot. I am also a bird hunter and we all know how fragile and a delicate situation it is to introduce dogs to gunfire. IMO, the gun range is not the place to make this introduction to your dog. What are you trying to accomplish other than not leaving the dog at home? With the breed(s) you mentioned, I would hate for you and your friends to be witness to the dog getting scared or rattled by being put in a situation he can’t mentally handle.
