While hunting along the Arkansas River, my daughter shot at a small 8 and missed, took off right as she pulled the trigger. When we went to double check to make sure she in fact did miss, she looks down and says dad here is a bottle and there is a note in it. We ried to get the note out several times using our fingers, but every time we would touch the note pieces would fall out, so we decided to break the bottle to get the note out. We are currently trying to find the family to give the note back to them. We are having trouble finding anyone and thought I would see if anyone here might know the family. Victor Elliott is the name and the town is Fairfax,Ok. I googled the name and town and the first hit was on find the grave site website with Victor Floyd Elliott from Temple,TX. If you know the family please PM me and I will give contact info. Thank you Brandon

that is super cool. Reminds me of a time I was hunting white wing dove in Uvalde. We found a box turtle with a name and address painted on it. We grabbed the turtle and went looking. Found the house and the lady said she had bought the house 25 years ago and had no clue who the turtle belonged to. She said she would take it but we declined and took it back to the ranch and released it. Stuff like this makes me love spending time outdoors. If you only focus on killing you are missing the point.

Really neat! Might try Ancestory.com to try and locate a living relative. Would also contact the Fairfax Oklahoma newspaper with your story. Good luck!

Super Cool. I knew one Elliott in Robertson County Tx, he passed away a few years ago. I don't know where his kin have moved off to, but I know he had 2 daughters that another friend of mind keeps up with. I'll see if they know the writer.

WOW!!! 75 years until someone found it! Makes me wonder what else is out there that is just waiting to be found!!!! It might be a fun road trip to drive to the town and see what the Courthouse records have on that name. My brother did that for my Mom's side of the family trying to trace where my Grandfather came from, and over the years, and more courthouses then I remember, he found his brother still alive in the Ukraine. You just never know what you will find once you start searching.

It shows the P.O. box number or mailbox number, town and that the "boddle" was put into a big flood in 1942. couldn't see the month and day very good from the picture.

I was curious.
Weather Time Line: Oklahoma 1935-1947 • 1935 February, March, and April: Unusually severe dust storms. The most general one on April 10-11,covered almost the entire state and was the heaviest known in central and eastern portions, reducing visibility to 11/2 blocks as far east as Cleveland (Pawnee County). The “Black Sunday” dust storm that struck in northwestern Oklahoma on the 14th was the worst ever seen in that region. Visibility was reduced to zero from Kenton to Arnett, beginning shortly after 4 PM. According to the observer at Kenton, the storm struck at 4:20 PM “turning afternoon brightness immediately into midnight darkness, and absolute zero visibility. It was totally dark and impossible to see without searchlight for at least 15 minutes. In the course of one hour, faint visibility was returning just enough to get around in the open. The storm came from the north and northeast and traveled at a very great speed.”(Quote from Climatological Data, April 1935 which cited Mr. Ralph H. Guy.) • 1938: Wettest February of century, statewide-averaged precipitation of 4.66 inches. • 1941: Wettest month of century, October statewide-averaged precipitation of 11.32 inches. • 1942 Wettest April of century, statewide-averaged precipitation of 8.50 inches. • 1943 May 18-22: Record flood on the Arkansas near Muskogee. • 1945 April 13-14: 14.6 inches of rain at Seminole. Wewoka Dam fails. • 1945 Wettest September of century, statewide-averaged precipitation of 7.86 inches. • 1947 Statewide-averaged precipitation of 0.20 inches ties for driest February of century

Very Cool! My grandmother told me as a kid living in OK. Every time and cow or horse died her and her siblings would set traps in the animal to catch buzzards. Once a buzzard was caught the tied a silver snuff can lid to the birds foot with a note and address written on it. Idea was someone would shoot the buzzard seeing a shiny object on it, find the note and write back to them.

The note reads like this: I put this boddle in a huge flood April 25 1944 if you happen to find it write and tell me. My address Victor Elliott Box 875 Fairfax, Okla.
I googled floods along the Arkansas River and found on April 21-23 there was a flood recorded in Wichita Kansas. We found his name through find my gravesite website. He was born May 5th 1930 and passed away in 1986 in Temple Texas. There were 4 pictures on the website and on the headstone the other name is Betty A. We have been trying to find her but haven't had any luck so far. A friend that has an account with ancestry may have found his nephew through the ancestry site she has messaged him but we have not heard from him yet. Will keep you posted when we find something out.
