Seems like it is being handled properly by the Missouri officials and by the daughter/dad. People are trying to create a controversy where there is none.

Huh, I don't see anywhere that the girl called the came warden to report the illegal kill. The dad did by all accounts. She didn't send the game warden a picture. The dad did.
So, the girl didn't really admit her mistake so much as the dad identified it and called the game warden. She didn't have a lot of choice on whether or not her dad called to report the incident. So????????? SHE IS A MINOR

There's no elk season it Texas, either. If an elk walks in I can't shoot it? In Texas you can. OK, so if there's no season, and it's not protected, why did they take this girl's animal? They are protected in Missouri their trying to reintroduce them, Texas has ridiculous laws on elk and its a long story but we should have a season so not really a good comparison.

What EW said +1...just do not understand why the young Huntress has to surrender the critter to the State Game Rangers to distribute as THEY PLEASE ....."IF" .....she does not want to ....and without any coersion from the State Officials...and OBTW ....IMO the Antlers are hers too....WHAT a Trophy !!!!
Possesion is 9 points of the law and unless the Elk is a prohibited animal in that State, or belongs to someone else and was shot illegally, which apparently none of these issures are being claimed...yadda yadda.
JMHO & YMMV
Ron From what I gleaned from the article Missouri has no elk season so it wasn't legal for her to shoot. I don't know what impact that it would have on poaching if someone who is caught gets to keep the meat and trophy and just pay a fine. I'd imagine a lot of people would realize in that case that it would be far cheaper to poach a desert sheep or whatever, and pay the ticket, than it would be to buy a tag.
